Sliding wardrobe doors. Help.

We had 2 sliding mirrored wardrobe doors, that eventually fell apart.

Have been looking to replace them, had a look in the usual suspects B&Q/Homebase, but appears we have none standard sizes Hmm it's the height, as ours aren't floor to ceiling, the opening is 1220mmx2032mm.

It's weird, because they didnt look fancy or bespoke or anything.

So now looking for made to measure type ones and getting quotes for £500+ for 2 bog standard plain mirrored doors. Hmm

Have I missed a trick or slipped into some sort of parallel universe?

Is there anything else I can do instead? I wouldn't mind spending that sort of money for something nice, but it just seems like an excessive amount for 2 large mirrors.

Thanks

Cat you just have mdf hinged doors made and then hang a mirror on the wall insterad? WOuld be much cheaper than your quotes.

it will be the mirror that is the problem. And it has to be safety glass. You could do them with ply (lighter and stronger than MDF) and wallpaper them to match the walls, or paint if you prefer (but ply would show the grain unless you buy an expensive hardwood-face veneer)

If you want to paper them, give a couple of coats of white emulsion or primer undercoat first, and the paper will look better. If you wanted to, and depending on clearance, you could screw mirrors to the surface.

Do you still have the bits of the old doors ? The upper sliding carriage usually has wheels and springs and it might be possible to clean, lubricate, reassemble and adjust.

I wondered if it would be easier to to take the existing top rails and simply attach them to your ceiling instead?

Only other alternative is to look on ebay locally for some older style sliding doors.

Have the tracks at the top moved to be standard height?

Fit curtain track and if you can, buy ready-made curtains to fit. Then fix a mirror to the wall (IKEA have them)

I agree with ThompsonTwins.

I experienced the same problem as OP and made some curtains instead.

Transformed the room for less than £50!

Thanks!

Dh has taken them all apart and put them back together and they seem ok for the time being.

Curtain is def an option, although will try and hold out a couple of months then may head to ikea and get a whole new system Grin
