Has anyone got a mortgage recently while on work probation period?

That's it really. Do lenders care if I have a job but am on the obligatory probation period?

Have had a mortgage paid on time every month for 10 years so they won't care will they?

We've just remortgaged with a new lender and I didn't even have my first payslip when we applied and they just had to confirm with my employers and get written details of my wage from them. Probation didn't even come up- possibly because it's a remortgage. Good luck!

Thanks sausagedog!

One of the questions on the employment reference might be if you are in a probationary period or not though. I used to ask that question when I was underwriting.

And did you decline if they were gonzo, or was it just part of the picture?

Yes my husband did. It's an Abbey (re-) mortgage through a broker. I'm earning too, but we needed his salary to pay the mortgage.

When we applied for our mortgage in Dec '10, I had a job offer but my start date wasn't until the January and I had a probationary period. I had to provide a copy of the offer letter, my employment contract and I think that they also contacted my employer-to-be directly for confirmation.
Given my salary only just covers childcare & travel costs, they may have taken the view that it didn't matter hugely if I didn't pass the probationary period on the basis that I wouldn't have had childcare or travel costs.

For some lenders it can be a big no-no Alwayswild but not every one. All underwriters will look at the bigger picture. Are you applying with anyone else?

Thanks for the replies.

Yes I would be applying with someone else gonzo but he is in a temporarily odd situation. I'm the higher earner in the better position so we'd probably do it all on me, perhaps using him to strengthen our case. We wouldn't even be looking to the max we can borrow on my income.
