Well Kitchen diner walls and ceiling now plastered and ready to paint.
'Tis a big room (what were we thinking).

What's the quick easy cheap way to paint new plaster please?

Pigletjohn -our builder didn't prime our newly plastered walls with thinned down emulsion and several flakey patches have appeared. Do you have any recommendations other than sanding down and starting again?

PigletJohn · 27/12/2011 22:05

I think that would be the best thing. Some people use an oil based primer on small patches.

be sure to sponge off any dust, as that also prevents good adhesion. On an entire wall you can use a soft broom to get most of it off, but I imagine you are working on small areas and will have paint fragments as well as plaster dust.

when rubbing paint off, dont sweat too much. Patches that are adhering firmly enough to be difficult to sand off are also firm enough to paint over.

if the plasterer has polished the surface like a mirror, that is very difficult to paint, so you could be forgiven for taking the shine off with a 1200 grade paper very lightly. They usually only do that if they've fallen out with the decorator.

I have some bare plaster that is two years old Blush. Do I need to still do the watered down paint, or can I crack straight on with the real stuff?

What about using one of those paint sprayer things? [lazy emoticon]

it is still bare plaster so it still needs a mist coat

use a large soft brush.

MissHonkover · 28/12/2011 14:49

Thanks! So, it's called a 'mist' coat even though it's not misted on?

PigletJohn · 28/12/2011 15:05

I think it's mist because you can see through it

Thats right about watering down the paint 50:50. However if the plaster is new you need a breathable paint which will still let the moisture out of the plaster otherwise your paint will bubble. www.bristolpaintingcontractors.com are painting our new extension and I've just asked about it. they will apply 2 undercoats and 2 topcoats, first undercoat being the 50;50 mix.
