we have bought a lovely (and too expensive) matress from john lewis and we've just slept in it for the second night - we have both woken up with sore back - arrgghhh - does that mean we have bought the wrong matress? is this usual whe you get a new matress? what happens if we have bought the wrong one - will johnlewis take it back?

i always wake up with a sore back on a new mattress, it takes a few days for me to get used to it .

what type of mattress is it?

i'm not sure what the rules are about returning non faulty stuff like that, i think you will have to phone JL and ask.

I got a new (v expensive!) mattress from another retailer - was a SilentNight one.

Lovely for a few weeks then I started getting back-ache. Aaargh!! Was really pissed off as it was a lot of money. But it passed, as either I got used to the mattress or it got used to me.

Is lovely now. Hope it works out as well for you.

We just got a new bed and silly expensive mattress from dreams. We picked them because they have a 40 night thing where if you don't like it after 40 nights of trying it you can return it. Must say I didn't sleep the first three nights. Mainly because it was new I think. Now two weeks in I'd live in my bed happilyGrin

Some top end mattress companies offer to exchange the mattress for a different tension one within the first 6 months if you have made a mistake. They ask you to try for 28 days first though, so I guess that is the 'bedding in' time. JL do sell this particular brand of mattress and when I asked the salesman he confimred they did, but was very guarded about it saying they didn't like doing it as they obviulsy couldn't resell the used mattress - may be they don't actively promote this and it is worth calling to check. Do you think it is too soft or too hard?

I had the same experience when I got my new mattress but I think my body was just adjusting after years of too-soft mattresses. I wouldn't be without it now.

What type of mattress did you get? I know you can get memory foam matress 'toppers' which might give you a differnt sensation if you think you've got a sprung mattress that's too firm.

after a few more nights sleep it's getting much better. no sore back today or yesterday and definetly getting more used to it. not sure of the type of matress we got but it's not memory foam. it feel very luxurious one which is good as it cost £800! it's a medium one and does feel quite firm. i think i am going to like it. with new duvet and duvet set its all feeling a bit crispy so probably need to wash the covers soon to get that slept in feel - iyswim!
