Hi, we live in a modern 3 storey town house but the very light airy living room has stairs which lead into the hall downstairs which is a little dark. We need to get some paint on the liner papered walls but need a shade of white/off white with a hint of something which will be both bright but not harsh in a living room and work in the hall as well. We also need to do the woodwork paint on the stairs and skirting. I need help as am rubbish at this!! Any recommendations on paint brand/colours?

the latest low VOC white paints suffer quite badly from yellowing, especially indoor where there is no sunlight. You might like to allow for this and use a paler colour than you want to end up with. Water-based paints are better for keeping their colour, but not as durable.

I have used Dulux Natural Calico in a hall and living room in the past and still like it after several years of using it in different houses.

Jasmine White by Dulux is a pretty good white with a slight yellow/warm tinge

mrsravelstein · 15/12/2011 16:14

dulux timeless is a nice white that's not too stark

i've just done most of my house in dulux subtle ivory 3 (you know the mix your own pots range?) which has a bit more depth to it than white

or dulux bleached lichen (also from the mix your own) is offwhite with a slightly olive hint in the paler shades

If you go for F&B. Wimborne White or Pointing is nice.

mrsravelstein · 15/12/2011 16:16

F&b pointing IS nice

also f&b white tie is gorgeous and has a real warmth to it, i've got it in my north facing lounge

PigletJohn · 15/12/2011 16:28

oh you meant emulsion?

It's the gloss that yellows.

thanks for all the suggestions! will be off to the diy store at the weekend to have a look. I'm still not sure about 'cream' as it always looks a bit dirty to me but then white seems a bit cold as well, hmm.

we have B&Q Antique White & it's lovely & also Dulux Morning Light in our halls, upstairs & downstairs.

Recommend both...Dulux goes on further of course !

gobblygook · 18/12/2011 18:07

What is Dulux morning light like? As you can see from other message posted today, O'm also having dilemma over 'white!'. Need to find a good dulux white

hobnob · 18/12/2011 19:00

Another vote for Dulux subtle ivory 3.

Willowisp · 18/12/2011 19:21

when the morning light first went up I thought it looked quite limey, but now we have white picture rails, skirting & architrave up it's lovely. Not lemony or limely, not yellowy...I think it must be if you have white & the sun shines on it. It's in north facing hall, which lots of natural light & east facing landing.

Not a dirty colour, nice & clean looking. It's so difficult to decide, my mum has natural calico & that looked quite grey in my walls but she does really like it.

All our paint work is white gloss & as far as I know the painter used Glidden paint. Our morning light is a light & space colour but also made up in the diamond matt, so we can white off marks (if we can be bothered Grin)

Hiya - that's interesting and good to know Willowisp. I saw the Light and Space range. You can't get testers in them, I don't think...?

We have a north facing kitchen which it may be nice in.

Thanks!

Willowisp · 18/12/2011 23:02

sorry, meant to say I think Morning light is supposed to look like white paint with the sun on it...typing too fast of course.

I think the light & space pigments work, along with the gloss paint, helping the light to bounce around...I know some people prefer eggshell.

I think you can buy testers, either at B&Q or else at a Dulux trade shop.

Sounds a good choice for your kitchen Smile

befuzzled · 19/12/2011 00:02

what about dulux trade brilliant white? Is that too stark? I am thinking of doing my whole house in it! (but have been living in rented 70's hell wverything beige, brown, green and yellow so is possibly a reaction to that)

vonnyh · 19/12/2011 15:21

We used Dulux Timeless in one of our rooms. Lovely clean shade, and not stark at all. Goilg to use it in our kitchen. We also have Natural Calico in the living roonm, I'd say that was more of a cream shade, rather than white.
