we've just had one put in today. it looks bloody lovely by the way.

we asked the same question re cost compared to tiling and were told that although the glass itself is pricey, the labour cost is minimal compared to the labour cost for tiling, and that if anything the glass might work out a bit cheaper.

it's more expensive the more you need to fiddle about with it too - for instance, i needed holes for 5 double sockets cut in mine, and that pushed the cost up a lot (i think about 70 quid per socket they said), and if you need anything other than plain straight rectangles (ie going around corners) it becomes more expensive.

I have a glass splashback behind the hob. I just got a sheet of special toughened glass from the local glazier made the size I wanted and got them to drill holes in the corners and supply mirror screws. This worked out massively cheaper than something specially called a 'splashback' would have done and is very nice. We don't have tiles anywhere else in the kitchen or any other splashback but if I'd go down the glass route again if we were to.

thanks both- v interesting!

will ask glazier up the road for advice. Have had someone working on kitchen now for last three weeks -knocking walls down etc- and am now looking for a quick finish and think the noise of TILE CUTTING will be more than my frayed nerves could stand

[aaaargh]

Yes - and then just think of all that grouting getting grotty over the years! Good luck with it all.

Yep we've got what hobnob has - just toughened glass fixed to the wall with a smart screw at each corner. We painted the back in the colour we want.

It doesn't look quite as smart as the proper glass splashbacks because of the screws in each corner, but it's cheaper - and also a lot cheaper and easier to replace if it ever cracks.

If you're intending to paint the glass, bear in mind that most glass has a slight blue/green tinge (unless you pay more for clear), so your colour will end up with a bit of that kind of tint.

Oh and do seal around the edges (we didn't at first and got flies crawling behind, ugh).

Kitchen being done as I type! I was quoted 4 times as much for glass splashbacks than the cost of the tiles. The tiles are grouted with grey grout as it goes better with the natural quarry tiles. so I cent see it getting yukky over time.
