Can you still get them from supermarkets?

I never had any luck there. Try Freecycle many people have packing materials too, especially at this time of year.

Been on there. Nothing at the moment but will keep looking! Thanks!

I went to our local retail park and just asked in the shops. They had hundreds out the back of the stores that they were more than happy to let me have my pick of.

You also need lots of tape to tape the boxes up and paper for wrapping kitchen stuff and ornaments in (bubble wrap is v expensive).

We got ours from BIL and SIL who had just moved house and we're offloading them onto MIL and FIL, who are about to move so they're kind of getting passed around the family.

BIL and SIL got theirs from the removal company - they sometimes have deals on. If you've got any fairly new neighbours they might still have some.

We found Pampers/Huggies boxes very useful for books because they're so strong and not that big

Netto and morrisons still have them round here tho they were a bit rubbish as they were the fruit ones with holes in the bottom! If all else fails, as much as it pained me, I paid for some from argos. They do moving packs according to size of property (2 bed / living room etc) think B&Q do them too.

I ordered some from the Internet (Boxboy or something). The removal folk I used gave me 40 for free as my move was going to cost over £200 and I bought some from the storage company I had some stuff in. I wish I hadn't got the Internet ones as although they're good they were too big and square for me to handle easily (sort of tea chest size) but the removal firm ones were a good size. Shame you're nowhere near me - I now have about 50 boxes I need to get rid of Xmas Grin

Use banana boxes; shallow for books. It's important you can lift what you pack. 12-bottle wine boxes good for books.

Seal all DVD/CD boxes with gaffer/elephant tape. We have had stuff nicked. Every time.

BettyBum · 15/12/2011 07:18

Thanks everyone.

You all must be mind readers, we have millions of books. Xmas Smile

Will try your suggestions, although not sure we can afford to buy any, this move has cleaned us out!

I put a message on free cycle and some guy has posted saying he has loads of boxes but I guess I should wait until w/end when DP can come with me to collect.

books are so heavy that you will need fairly small boxes, or you won't be able to carry them.

sillymillyb · 15/12/2011 18:20

Ah, Im in Newcastle.... wrong direction :S any other MN people want any though I have some going spare!

newgirl · 15/12/2011 18:24

we were given loads by our removal co - are you doing it yoruselves? if using a company they drop them round for you, plus clothes rails etc

Dorothyredboots · 16/12/2011 10:12

I'm moving too and am collecting all the bubble wrap I can from the fruit isle in Tesco. Last time we moved we got boxes from the removal company and they let you take them back afterwards & you got a lot of the money back on them.
