Moving House - if the seller asked you to hold their mail for a couple of days, would you?

Royal Mail website is playing silly buggers, thought I had set up our re-direction last Wednesday, we complete next Tuesday, but just discovered it didn't go through (I know I should have made certain at the time but 16mo DD was trying to help me!).

Going to the post office on Monday morning so set it up in person but means there will be a weeks worth of post that we won't be able to access.

If you were asked by your seller if they could pick up their post would you agree or would you think them cheeky? Anyway we could sweeten the request so they feel helpful??

Feeling a little stressed with everything and this isn't helping Blush

of course I would agree - what reasonable person wouldn't?
If you gave me your new address I would forward them for you.

Fuchzia · 10/12/2011 23:27

Or get some stickers with your new adress on them. They can then just slap them on the envelope and bung them in the post box

PogoBob · 10/12/2011 23:37

Wouldn't they have to pay extra postage to forward them on??

Thanks for the fast response, I'm never moving house again it's way to stressful and we're not even in a chain!!

if you are redirecting you just put the new address on and pop it back into a post box, you don't pay more postage.

Hope it all goes well!

House will be scrubbed before we leave, I'll leave a treat for them and a note asking them if it's okay for us to pick up the post sometime.

Yes, but please tell them when your re-direction kicks in. Our last house move, we agreed to do this for the sellers but they didn't do a re-direction and they kept appearing for months and months.

greentown · 11/12/2011 08:51

Give them your new address on labels or ask them to write MOVED and the new address on the envelopes and stick them straight back in a post box.
It doesn't cost any extra money - I've done this many, many times.

greentown · 11/12/2011 08:54

I'd rather forward your mail than have to arrange a time for you to come back to collect it - also, it avoids having get into any 'house issues' that may have turned up.

I agree with the pre-printed stickers for them to pop in the post box and do let them know you have set up a re-direction. The last lot of people here didn't and we are still getting mail for them know, including birthday and christmas cards Sad and parcels Shock. I know someone who knows them so I tell my friend and within a day the lady turns up for them. The last time I told her I wouldn't be keeping anything for her anymore. But she still wouldn't give me her new address. I think she thinks I might turn into a stalker!

I've had no qualms in the past about redirecting mail onwards. Just remember to tell any government bodies (tax credits, child benefit) etc your new addres as soon as as their letters are not allowed to be redirected by the PO

I think it would be fine? Ours asked us to put any mail for them through one of the neighbours, and I did it even though our sellers were really tight and took every single thing, even ripped out fitted wardrobes and left damage!! but i felt it would be petty not to just shove the mail through the neighbours as requested, as it is no trouble really and also i think its a criminal offence to chuck someone else's mail in the bin? (i may be wrong though) but if you are good seller and leave the place clean and you dont cause any difficulty for them of course they should forward or keep your mail until your redirect comes through! They would have to be very unreasonable not to. Just drop them a quick note saying, redirect is going to take a week to go into effect would you mind keeping the mail for us or just forwarding it on, im sure it will be fine

Thistledew · 12/12/2011 01:22

You could leave them a couple of large (folio) sized envelopes already addressed and stamped for them to put any post in, but simply redirecting by writing the new address on has worked for me, and I haven't minded doing it for the seller of my house. It may be clearer that it is a redirect if they simply cross through your old address and write the new one, than putting on a sticky label which completely obscures the old address.
