Talk to me about extractors and sinks (yawn)

And so the renovations go on...

Trying to find a good modern stainless steel sink and extractor fan for our contemporary kitchen. Our architect friend who's been helping us with drawings has very expensive taste but he's come up with

Extractor:De Dietrich DHG377XP1 canopy hood

Sink: Astracast Vantage 1.5b st/steel sink

Any other thoughts? I know NOTHING about either but would like to spend less on these but have them still look nice.

The good thing about this sink is that it sort of has a lip around the edge, and we're likely having a wood worktop...

Can you post links?

PigletJohn · 08/12/2011 21:44

like this?

gobblygook · 09/12/2011 09:45

Well done Piglet John, that's the sink

This is the extractor

Just want cheaper options - if anyone has any good recommendations

I'm thinking of getting my sink (undermounted though) from these people. From what I have read the thickness and type of stainless steel is the same as Franke etc but so much cheaper. Going to take a gamble as it could save us 100s

you can get a perfectly servicable sink for £100 or so, but if you want something "special" you can pay as much as you want.

An undermounted sink needs to go in a worktop that is in some way impervious to water, like granite or corian. A wooden or laminated worktop will, sooner or later, be damaged by water getting in.

I have my eye on an extra-deep stainless sink for next time, that will run from wall to the line of the worktop front, with no worktop underneath it, I think it will be easy to keep clean with no worries about splashes. The one I have seen costs £433 though Sad from Wickes and is 620mm front to back. It seems unusually thick.

I've tried various sinks in the past, and nothing is as durable and easy to keep clean as stainless.

Pigletjohn - I know all the arguments about wooden worktops but I like them. Corian is sooooo expensive though and I don't like granite

That Wicks sink sounds interesting. Can you link me?

Miserablemum - good link, thanks

piglet john I have one of those sinks! I think the photos of my kitchen are still on my profile. You don't need to pay that much. My mother in law has the same one and it cost her just under £200 from cityplumbing.

This is the same on but bouht elsewhere than Wickes.this is it

I have the 1.5 bowl one.

gobblygook · 09/12/2011 14:07

Cece - nice kitchen. I like the Astracast sink you linked to - I think I prefer it to the vantage style.

What wood top do you have? Did you treat it? Where did you buy it from. That's my next thread Blush

Oh and thank you Smile

the Wickes sink is for some reason not on their website, but it is in their Kitchens catalogue (available to order, 4 weeks, they said). Code no 143-925

this is a big file page 59 at the bottom.

cece, thanks, didn't know it was made by Astracast as I haven't seen it elsewhere. Including VAT, list price looks similar but there might be a cheaper supplier. It was the sink-and-a-half I liked. It does seem very solid.

PigletJohn · 09/12/2011 16:54

hello cece I can see your very tidy kitchen, but can't really see the sink.

cece · 09/12/2011 18:08

The cheapest plave I found it was cityplumbing which is a chain of plumbers merchants - as I say my MIL bought one for about £200.

I would add an extra photo but; it would take me two hours to retidy it to the state it is in in the photo and I have lost my camera Grin

PigletJohn · 09/12/2011 19:37

I had a look at the City Plumbing website but can't see it Sad

cece · 09/12/2011 20:51

No there website is useless. Phone them or go into one of their 'stores'. Be brave they are full of plumbers and it is very male! I got served very quickly when DC3 was 1 week old and he started crying. I asked what their breastfeeding policy was Grin

PigletJohn · 09/12/2011 20:53

"Be brave they are full of plumbers and it is very male! "

hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!

Thread hijack warning!

Cece I love your kitchen tiles, they are just what I'm looking for - can I ask where you got them from?

Apologies for butting in Blush

cece · 11/12/2011 16:38

No worries

kiwi green is the colour we have. We bought them in Topps Tiles - they order them in for you. They had a colour board for them behind the counter if you ask.
