Would a broken sink be covered by buildings or contents insurance?

My DM was babysitting recently and managed to smash a hole in the very expensive basin in our newly rented home. I don't want to tell the letting agent as I don't want them to hate me! I have looked at replacing it and it looks like it would cost over £600 which I don't have. We have yet to sort our contents insurance so I thought my only option would be to put in a claim in a month or 2 and suffer the raised premiums. I know this is not really honest but I can't see another way round it.

The quotes I have looked at seem to not show basins etc as contents. Does anyone know if they ever are counted as contents? Will I have to come clean to the LL? or save up and cover the cost? I am really loathe to make myself look like a terrible tenant because a) I am not and b) the damage was actually caused by a sweet little 65 year old lady who is mortified. I just want to get it sorted as I feel so bad about it but I dont think I could ever get that sort of £ together (am poor student living in London with small DC)
What would you do?

Things like basins, that are attached to the house/flat, would come under the buildings insurance, not contents insurance.

But it would depend if the insurance covered accidental damage anyway - some buildings insurance only covers named things like fire/theft/explosions etc and not accidents.

I'm afradi you'll have to discuss it with the landlord and see what the options are.

Oh god. I think I will have to gather courage until after Christmas as I have just been in daily contact with them over them getting things fixed (not our fault stuff, boiler breaking and general maintenance etc) and speak to them in January. My Mum is coming to stay for Christmas so will maybe insist on paying for the damage. I don't want to raise the subject with her as I feel bad and the whole thing had her back on anti anxiety meds as it was!

DD was laying directly under it when it happened, DM was changing her nappy when she flicked a towel in the air which knocked my lovely mirror off the wall and into the basin which caused them both to smash and shower glass and bits of basin everywhere. A freak accident but it makes us look like disrespectful bastards with no care for the house.
