I am really not very confident with colours; white's my thing...

But we're doing our kitchen and I want to get some colour in. Where to start? Anyone know of any inspiring online sources?

We're have carcasses from Howdens, cupboard doors made by a carpenter - matt spray painted MDF, handle-less, with a wooden work top and formica backsplash. I quite like the idea of very off white/grey doors - but maybe not.
Feel like somewhere in all that there should be a bright colour but where and what?

Thanks

What colour is the backsplash?

I'm a bit nervous with colour too, but then that's partly because I think badly done it can look very naff.

I'm happy to keep cupboards/surfaces/etc quite neutral but pick up a bit of colour in a coloured fridge and the odd matching vase, lamp or chair.

We have an open plan kitchen/diner. We're really happy with our Copenhagen Blue (Dulux heritage range colour) walls in dining area, pale blue SMEG fridge (by chance, it's a perfect match) links this to kitchen, units painted in Quilted Calico 2 and walls in Quilted Calico 4 (ie. paler walls), also Dulux. We have dark granite tops with a bit of a fleck so you can't see the crumbs and pale tiles to keep walls neutral. Floor is oiled wood though this needs to be done every 6 months an we're rubbish at remembering. You need to get the paints from a Dulux mixing centre. Hope that helps!

I would go with the off white/soft grey units and have a bright colour on your splashback - teal, citrine or raspberry.

Yes, I'm thinking of a bolder colour splashback.

I like the idea of grey units/red colourway splashback, grey floors, white walls...all the services are up one side, on the other side are two very large windows - one fixed - and at the end are large concertina doors. A long oak table and bench will go across the fixed window. I thought I could match and mix with some nice cushions on the bench if I did a bright splashback

One of my close friends has exactly that. Hmm I have asked her if she minds me lifting her colourway lock and stock, and she says no, of course not (we don't live in the same city) but is this entirely against home protocol?

Olive/sagey green with grey and white and oak is very stylish and not as 'common' as red

hester · 04/12/2011 21:37

Oh yes, what noddyholder said. I like that.

gobblygook · 05/12/2011 11:21

Yes, I like that too...sagey/olive green with off grey. I think that could look good. Thanks Noddy

What colour are your walls?

Paint is relatively easy and cheap to experiment with, whereas kitchen units and tiles aren't so much. If you are feeling nervous, I'd put colour on the walls instead of into the immovable units of the kitchen.

Then there's accents on the moveable stuff - you don't say if you have curtains, but there's always a seat for the bench and colour on the cushion etc, etc.
