Painting orange pine

Have been given some very good quality bunkbeds by lovely friends updating their now teenagers' bedroom. Very grateful but they are that lovely orange pine so popular fifteen years or so ago. Would ideally like to paint or have them painted in F&B Pointing an off white.

They are varnished at the mo. Has anyone done this? Is it something a half decent amateur can do (am quite handy with minor DIY projects) or am I going to make a hash of it? In the distant corners of my brain I think I remember that some people get furniture spray painted at car bodyshops - has anyone done that? And if so, how much?

Ta ever so.

We had orange pine in the bathroom (goes so well with the maroon suite) and painted it over with ordinary white gloss. Worked fine.

Yes a half decent amateur can do it! You need to sand them down to key the surface and use a primer. There are loads of primers for different surfaces in bandq. I have used one called 'cupboard makeover' or something before as well as a basic wood and metal primer- both seemed to work but the longer term durability of the finish may be better with the more specialist ones.

I have painted a few items of pine furniture and the results look great. Firstly you need to give the item a very good rub down and then wash them over with sugar soap. Allow to dry and then use a primer, once that has dried use the colour of your choice.

I know preparation is key to these things. Thing is I have a low attention span, and bedheads have lots of turned slats so I am going to get bored and make a hash of it I think.

Some advanced googling has found me these people who are in my area so unless the cost is crippling, I am going to leave this to a pro I think!

Hi Davey, didn't know anyone offered a service like that - if you get a quote would you post back the cost? - I have several bits of pine that could do with this treatment.

sure will.
