Lamp hunters - help: alternative to Moooi Random lamp

oricella · 22/11/2011 21:24

For a long time I have loved the Random lamp by Moooi Unfortunately the budget won't stretch that far and I'm looking for alternatives...

It needs to be sizeable to fill a void between downstairs and upper floors (80-100 cm diameter) and would also consider something in a bold colour (to match blue windows)

Anyone up for the challenge to find me an alternative?

The ikea paper one is a bit similar and much cheaper - I saw someone who had spraypainted it to make it look a bot different and I think I will consider this for a similar area in our new house .....

befuzzled · 22/11/2011 21:28

this one I mean www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/30190447/

befuzzled · 22/11/2011 21:29

the one I saw was lightly sprayed silver so just edging but made it look a bit more expensive. You could spray it blue!

oricella · 22/11/2011 21:31

That one is on the back-up list, but still not convinced. Could let two toddlers loose on it with some blue paint, that would maybe yield something interesting

thogh I think you should save up for the random one Grin

befuzzled · 22/11/2011 22:14

this is VERY similar dwell.co.uk/112029/Abacca-shade-grey/

PacificDogwood · 22/11/2011 22:17

Make your own:

Large balloon/beach ball
Wallpaper paste
A bit of old rope Grin

Like the Dwell one

MrsJAlfredPrufrock · 22/11/2011 22:18

Why don't you buy a lampshade frame and make something?

oricella · 22/11/2011 22:18

ooh.. that dwell one might do the trick! Like the JL one, but too small

Thanks (dp is stunned at the idea of other MN'ers joining in the search!)

OP posts:
befuzzled · 22/11/2011 22:20

I like the Dwell one - you could spray it any colour

tell your DP there is NOTHING we can't find!

oricella · 22/11/2011 22:21

Grin at PD

It's a brand new house, so after something stunning and a bit scared that any craftwork on my part would end up in bringing the whole place down

PacificDogwood · 22/11/2011 22:24

Ah, nononono, what you are after is a stunning juxtaposition of cutting edge modernity with a creative masterpiece that declares you Onwership of the space you inhabit...

I think the Dwell one may well be a Winner.

befuzzled · 22/11/2011 22:26

I also quite like this one but might be a bit tacky in RL www.bhs.co.uk/mall/productpage.cfm/bhsstore/976705/233067

befuzzled · 22/11/2011 22:27

befuzzled · 22/11/2011 22:29

ffs Eclipse pendant chandelier

oricella · 22/11/2011 22:33

How about this one? Too rustic?

Moving on to wall lights now...
and cork flooring...
and towel heaters....
despairs

I am saving up for a Random light. This is the closest knock-off I've found, but I think I might hold out for the real thing.

oricella · 23/11/2011 08:59

wow - they really are going for the replica's aren't they? I think at those prices I'd keep on saving a bit more and go for the real thing

Went for the dwell one in the end and live in hope that one day I'll get the Random light maybe start dropping strong hints about a 40th birthday present

thanks all

befuzzled · 23/11/2011 09:38

which colour Dwell one did you go for? Can you let us know what it's like in the flesh? I may get one ...

MrsJAlfredPrufrock · 23/11/2011 10:28

Such ugly on-trend lighting.

Wouldn't you prefer a Foscarini Caboche light hanging low over your stairwell? I suspect you will still love the Foscarini in 10 years, the Random not so much. Grin Sorry to sound so much like my Mother.

oricella · 23/11/2011 14:47

I'm struggling to love the Foscarini right now MrsJ! Does your mother has one over her stairwell?

Befuzzled - went for the grey one and will let you know what it's like in real life... only a few more manic weeks before the whole place is done

goes off to chase the electricity company, because what is the point of nice lighting if you can't get the power on

befuzzled · 23/11/2011 16:41

In return, could you please find me a cheaper large white oval knock-off Tulip dining table when you have a minute or any of you interiors people on this thread.

Primafacie · 23/11/2011 16:50

Befuzzled, like this one?

befuzzled · 23/11/2011 17:25

Yes! that's by far the ceheapest I've seen. Unfortunately is out of stock - please shout if you see elsewhere.

Primafacie · 23/11/2011 17:43

Gah, rookie mistake Blush

This one is not as cheap but still a bargain compared to the real thing, and comes in various sizes/tops.
