Where to go for a new kitchen?

We need to replace the kitchen in our new place (move on Monday), sooner rather than later. Any suggestions for places to go to would be greatly appreciated.

We are thinking of knocking the wall between dining room and kitchen to make a big kitchen/diner and for me to get an island unit - yay!! :)

depends on your budget

homebase and B&Q will be starting their 'january sale' around the 10th of december (ironic)

not sure about the boutique companies though

Staverton · 22/11/2011 01:20

How funny was just searching the archives for the same...
What is your budget?

minicorrect · 22/11/2011 02:18

Got ours from Benchmarx - same range as Wickes but much cheaper, available immediately and already made up. Ignore their 'trade only' line...

sleepatlast · 22/11/2011 03:13

Don't discount IKEA if you can get a good fitter. Surprisingly good kitchens!

Staverton · 22/11/2011 10:02

Where do you get a good fitter from??

Have fallen in love with John Lewis of hungerford sadly and want a painted wood one although budget does not match aspirations..

skandi1 · 22/11/2011 10:47

I have looked at Kit Stone for painted solid wood kitchen. Prices look v reasonable.

Or I saw Yewtree kitchens. In Sussex. Solid wood painted at v cheap prices.

Worth a look. Don't know about sales though.

Staverton · 22/11/2011 14:43

Thanks for info and sorry for hijack OP

We got our last one from howdens which was very reasonable and good quality

drcrab · 22/11/2011 20:05

Thanks everyone!! Budget isn't big so I'm pretty happy that people have recommended ikea, b&q type places! A friend of mine used ikea to fit out her kitchen and it looks very sleek (she had an architect too so may have helped). Will let you know who we go with when we are in. Oh this living in box world is horrid!

if you go with IKEA be careful who your fitter is

they don't have service gaps at the back of the units so any pipework or electrics you have to cut through the side of the cupboard which invalidates any guarantee you have on it so approach with care

We've just had a Tesco kitchen put in... fab choice if units and worktop and reasonable price. The units are actually from a company called lakeland kitchens if you want a look.

hobnob · 22/11/2011 22:29

I have fabulous painted oak kitchen from Benchmarx (see minicorrect's post):

I haven't yet used them, but www.diy-kitchens.co.uk has been highly recommended on numerous kitchen threads here in the past (and elsewhere on the internet). They sell 'second nature' kitchens at a fraction of the price of traditional kitchen companies. They are certainly efficient at answering queries, and I intend to place an order with them as soon as the room that will house our kitchen is actually built:)

We used a small independent kitchen company who had a great choice of kitchen brands & a great designer. However, when we had a problem with our job a year or two after the kitchen was fitted, we discovered that the company no longer exists! At least with the big names (magnet, b&q etc) you have less chance of that happening.

Labradorlover · 23/11/2011 11:53

Ikea here. Just been fitted. Had a man out to measure up and plan ( Plan much better than Howdens ), which cost £20.
Fitted by my joiner, who admitted he didn't he didn't like fitting Ikea kitchens but had one himself. Also because of no service gap really straight, flat walls help with the fitting.
Got my worktops elsewhere.
And for wall knocking down, you may need a Building warrant.

cowboylover · 23/11/2011 12:08

I have not used them but a quick look at the one libelulle said is great value! Burbidge 'second nature' range is great. I used to work in a showroom and we sold them for a lot more than that!

IKEA
IKEA
IKEA
designed it with their planner tool thingy (cost nothing)
that then ordered all the parts
hired a local chippy to build and fit it
worktops came from an online company
appliances came from SDES in Woolston
its wonderful - and I can change the drawer fronts whenever I like
