I know you have to if you're in a conservation area but we're not in a conservation area more 1930s semis and everyone has upvc. Would I be mad to consider putting in wood frame windows and wooden porch? It looks so much nicer.

I'm quite tempted to pursue a career in aesthetically pleasing uPVC windows using historic glass, proper weighted sashes/hand-forged hinges and ironmongery.

I'm really enjoying this thread. I feel suspended between the girl of 30 so despising of uPVC windows and the bungalow with the grab-rail in the karzi.

MrsJAlfredPrufrock, you asked me about my house. It's 400 years old with bastard leaded lights.

Definitely couldn't argue a case for upvc here Grin

smartypants - It sounds lovely. And of course you wouldn't swap those for plastic.

I have a 1930's house, have got wooden double glazed windows and copied leaded lights from the originals. hth

I thought UPVC gave out harmful fumes in a house fire, as well? I'd avoid it if possible for this reason. Though we don't have much choice!

DorothyGherkins, we have upvc and still get mould.. It\s not to do with them upvc or wood. it's because the house is not heated enough. the windows are cold and the moisture in the air hits a cold surface and turns to condensation.
