DS would like a green bedroom...Tips/ideas please?

We are about to redecorate DS (4) bedroom. He says he would like it to be green. How do I do it without it becoming reminiscent of a 70s avocado bathroom suite?

Can anyone suggest some colours that might work together? I've got loads of colour cards/brochures but the choice brings me out in a cold sweat to be honest - I'm rubbish at making decisions and I'll just end up getting magnolia!

Our DCs have a jungle based bedroom painted with Crown Apple Mint and some fern-type shade on the wood work. It looks fine and bright and not 70s at all.

Step away from the magnolia!

F&B Breakfast Room Green is divine, not sure appropriate for a four year old though. But it's gorgeousBlush

virgiltracey · 18/11/2011 18:52

DS1 wanted green and I was worried too. We went for white walls with a green feature wall, green curtains, green bedding and some green shelves from Ikea. Its looked fab and he loved it and it wasn't dark and dingy or 70s!

orienteerer · 18/11/2011 18:53

My suggestion is to stall the whole idea for a bit eg "we'll think about it after Christmas" (etc). Did this with DS who wanted an "army' bedroom with green walls, he's forgotten about it nowGrin.

MrsKitty · 18/11/2011 21:13

Thanks for all the suggestions (sorry for my late response - work got in the way HmmGrin)

rollmops - don't think DH would agree to F&B in the kids rooms - I couldn't even convince him to go for it in the hallway! Grin

Chaotica, I was wondering about a jungle type theme. I don't think the Apple Mint you linked to would cut it for DS - bit too pale. "I'd like GREEN, Mummy. DARK green."

Virgil - I like the feature wall idea - could perhaps go quite bright green with that, and I do like green & white together - I think it looks quite fresh & crisp.

What do you think of 'feature walls' vs 'half & half' walls (i.e. a brighter green on the bottom with white or light shade on the top?

orienteerer, I did try that line but DH wants to get it done before Christmas and green has been DS's "most favourite colour in the world" for quite a while now - not convinced he'd drop it Grin

DS's bedroom has one wall in B&Q's Grasshopper green, he likes it. He's 11.

PastGrace · 18/11/2011 23:35

I think I prefer feature walls to half and half, but I suppose it depends on the size of the room...

this might be useful, just to demonstrate how you can make a room look very green without actually needing to do too much too it.

Or there are some great green pieces of artwork here. There are some nice alphabet/number ones on the website too, but they seem to be about £100! They seem like quite fun ways to add colour to the walls though?

3monkeys · 18/11/2011 23:38

DS 2 persuaded grandad to paint his! He has 2 walls darkish green and 2 lime green. It's actually quite nice

whattheactualjeff · 18/11/2011 23:55

Dulux Forest falls is a totally lush green, and rather trendy at the moment. It goes from a very dark glossy green to about forest falls 3 - which I've used before - which is an amazing zingy but weirdly chalky type colour. I really recommend it. With pure white ceiling/ww it's very uplifting.

Chaotica · 19/11/2011 00:10

Actually, I totally forgot that we'd just painted what will be their playroom shades of lime green (darker and lighter) - we used an dulux lime green this time. We did feature walls for this room - don't know whether I like the idea of half and half either. I do agree that there are some lovely darker shades though - it could be a serious rainforest.

startail · 19/11/2011 00:18

My 70's bedroom was bright apple green. Not at all dingy. It was painted a much more tasteful soft green when I was a teen and I got a lovely thick mid sage carpetGrin (my cold, thin old blue carpet was a long standing issue with my long suffering mum)

virgiltracey · 19/11/2011 14:45

DS's feature wall was a whole wall rather than half and half but because we had white in there too we did go for a really bright zingy green. It looked really good and modern.

I'd tend to go for a whole wall rather than half and half. Half and half maybe looks a little dated unless you have a period house and already have the wall the wall split by a dado/picture rail.

crazygracieuk · 19/11/2011 14:54

My son has never had green walls but had this when he was a simialr age.

gomummygo · 19/11/2011 14:58

DS's room is a darker sage green. We did it with all bright white trim/doors/curtains/etc. Mahogany furniture. I think it's crisp and works really well, he likes it a lot.

He did originally want it to be lime though! (Disclaimer, he is 3!)

overmydeadbody · 19/11/2011 15:01

I always advise to go with white walls and then green accessories, but if your DS really wants green paint just go for it on one wall, or maybe paint stripes?

DS's walls are all magnilia at the moment, soon to be painted white, and all the colour in his room comes from his furniture being painted, his huge desk painted this bright blue and his bedding being bright, blind birhgt, and I reupholstered his swivel chair with colourful fabric too.

overmydeadbody · 19/11/2011 15:02

could you paint green and white stripes like this?

overmydeadbody · 19/11/2011 15:03

I think a nice clean dark green would lool lovely, not 80s avocado. Just steer clear of creeny grey colours, go for more pure green cloours

overmydeadbody · 19/11/2011 15:04

here's a green bedroom with white walls

overmydeadbody · 19/11/2011 15:10

awesome green wallpaper

MrsKitty · 19/11/2011 19:40

Thanks for all the links overmydeadbody - lots to think about. Love your desk BTW - stunning colour!

We set off to B&Q earlier today and came home with lots of tester pots and now have green smears all over the wall... Will definitely be going for the feature wall rather than half/half. DS is favouring quite a bright apple/spearmint colour (DH not sold on it, but was one of my favourites too), which we might pair with a pale apple or milky white.

Anyone seen any green large check bed linen anywhere? I'm sure I saw some a while ago, but can think where.

MrsKitty · 19/11/2011 19:44

crazygracie - Saw that in IKEA a few weeks ago - He'd love it. Think i'll add it to the christmas present pile Grin.

pastgrace, there's some lovely prints on that site -might have to settle down and take a proper look later. (DS was just looking over my shoulder going "ooooh I like 'at one. Ooooh and 'at one. Can I have 'at one too?.....)

I've just done a scheme for a clients kids room - 1 x lime green wall with the rest in brilliant white, it has a matching ensuite.
It's funky and could be grown up or grown down depending on accessories.
You could look at something like this too... createworks.co.uk/shop/article_WA222X_001/A-Pirate's-Life-for-me---Wall-sticker..html?shop_param=cid%3D4%26aid%3DWA222X_001%26

or

hints of green that can be easily changed when he gets bored

MrsKitty · 19/11/2011 20:44

Love the bubbles! And the tree. Do those sticker things look as good in real life, or do they start peeling off and looking a bit grubby after a few months? Also, what are they like to remove when the time comes?

thegirlwithnoname · 19/11/2011 20:57

DO NOT paint a room Lime Green whilst painting 'into the light'. Half way around the room whilst painting the second coat, you will not be able to see where you have been, and where you need to go!!!
(Even more irritating when the dd who request lime green, decides she hates it and wants it white really! Angry I was very pissed off and made her live with the Lime Green for a few weeks before I painted the walls white.)

PastGrace · 19/11/2011 22:37

No green checks, but Dunelm Mill has some green blankets, and also some bedding that might look quite good with those pictures I linked to earlier

here
not sure how this one is different
