Would you buy a really hideous looking house?

Not planning to move at the moment because we can't afford it but I have seen a house on the Market that has got me thinking.

We live in a Victorian two up two down, we don't have room to swing a cat. A house has come on the Market that is worth roughly the same as ours but it is very ugly. It is ex-council, 1960s, very boxy, strange slit windows but it is 4 bedrooms and way bigger than ours. Sometimes in magazines I see trendy london designers who own ugly homes but give them a really trendy interior and they get away with it.

Would you consider buying a house like this?

Type in charles street £375k and you will see a 2 bed in my street. Mine is much much smaller though and I think the house for sale is massively overpriced. Modern houses are more value for money.

google exterior house makeovers. There are some companes that do amazing makeovers. Probably charge a fortune but great for inspiration!

I think the patio at the front needs softening with planting in the flower bed in front and the porch/castle thing needs a rethink. In York there is no way a georgian or victorian terrace with that much space would be on the market this long though - which is what makes me think it's the look/age of it.

If my house was like my neighbours I would be happy to stay put but it's just so much smaller.

Of course that is because I am incredibly lazy and I work about 1/4 mile away. And the entrance hall!

I like Northern's house too. But I'm a sucker for arched porches and 1920s stuff.

I bought a 60's house and prettied it up. I have complete strangers call in to ask me all about it - just this evening a guy called in to ask where I got my outside lights and my door as he thought they were stunning, he wanted to take a photo because he loved my house so much. Must say while I'm flattered, I guess that's the biggest down side, making it look nice has attracted a bit too much attention.

Our dilemma is that our (current) 'heart' house is diametrically opposite our 'head' house. Thankfully we don't have to buy right now and there maybe something better still yet to come on the market. Not sure we can pay ~ the same amount (assuming we get one of them for less than it's currently on for since it's been on 15 months) and then need to spend to bring it up to scratch when we could buy the other one and just move in, job done ... but live with the 'heart' house on view every single day for the next 20 years!

OP that house is a long way from the ugliest house I've ever seen. It just looks like a modernist-inspired 60s/ 70s-built house.

I would go for space over external appearance any time. Every victorian house I've ever lived in has been riddled with building issues and frankly shoddily put together. It's nice to have character but character doesn't have to be victorian/ edwardian era, like others have said.
