How much would you pay for the following fittings?

  1. American-style fridge freezer, brushed steel, water/ice dispenser plumbed in to mains supply, approx 5yrs old, £1500 when new. Not fitted into kitchen as such, but has cupboards built all around IYSWIM!
  1. Curtains & roman blinds - all made-to-measure and fitted by John Lewis, all with blackout linings, approx 2 yrs old, cost £2k in total (Christ, can't believe I spent so much on the curtains and blinds for 2 bedrooms Shock)
  1. Chandelier 6-bulb light fitting from Next, approx 4 yrs old, £150 when new
  1. Wooden venetian blinds, 2" deep slats, made & fitted by John Lewis, approx 4 yrs old, £1k in total when new

I am happy to take all of the above with me to the new house, even if we can't use it (I can either sell on ebay or re-use some of fabric). We accepted a really low offer from our buyers in the end, so really begrudge leaving such expensive and high quality fittings behind for free. I want to give them the opportunity to buy it if they want, but want to know what sort of price do you think is reasonable to charge?

Forgot to mention that we are leaving a thatched-roof summer house for free (cost £4k when new 5yrs ago) as we can't move it, and I think it is a bit cheeky to try to charge for something that we have no intention of taking with us!

I think the blinds you should leave for free anyway as they are fitted. I wouldn't pay much if anything for a five year old fridge either. Tell them they are welcome to make an offer on these things and see what they come back at.

typicalvirgo · 16/11/2011 14:38

what make is the fridge ? some are more desirable than others.

Zeeky · 16/11/2011 14:41

I'm inclined to leave the venetian blinds as they are fitted, but will definitely take the fabric roman blinds (attached with velcro to a wooden batton) if they do not want them. Same goes for fridge - it's like new, but who wants to pay for someone else's 5yr old fridge? We can always stick it in the garage as an extra fridge - I would prefer to do that than let them have it for peanuts.

I'll just see what they offer I guess.

Vendors are leaving all their curtains and blinds in the house we are buying, but they are not my taste, so I wouldn't have wanted to pay for them no matter how expensive they were when new, so I guess the same goes for ours here!

Typicalvirgo you sound like you regret taking your fittings with you? The fridge is an LG one. They have no doubt come down massively in price since we got ours...

Catsdontcare · 16/11/2011 14:45

You could offer them first refusal on the fridge and say you are going to put it on ebay or something. I think it's always a bit tricky with this sort of thing. My sisters house sale went totally sour over blinds and a few bits of furniture.

Zeeky · 16/11/2011 15:41

Catsdontcare I can't be doing with getting into a dispute over it! If they don't want to pay for the stuff then I will just take it with me.

Firawla · 16/11/2011 17:31

you will probably end up taking them with you i think? our sellers said make an offer for any fittings, we said no so they took everything (even the doorbell ffs lol) but people tend to want to put new in anyway, so if they leave them included then they make do with it for a bit but replace them soon enough with their own taste anyway, so wouldnt want to pay out extra for the previous owners ones

noddyholder · 16/11/2011 17:33

Fridge £500, blinds for free,chandelier £50

Auntiestablishment · 16/11/2011 18:50

I had this when I bought this house: the vendor wanted extra money for various bits & pieces in the house. I said I wasn't paying a penny more - I was paying plenty for the house and while I didn't care if they left them, I wasn't going to pay for them.

They took them all. I do regret the living room curtains but nothing else - and still think it was a cheek to ask for extra money (things like £25 for the number on the door) after getting a damn good price for the house.

londonmackem · 16/11/2011 18:54

I would pay £200 for the fridge but probably not the curtains unless you have massive windows. Am still cursing our vendor who didn't offer curtains for sale and have been quoted £1000 - agh!

Melindaaa · 16/11/2011 18:56

If the kitchen has been built to fit around the fridge you should leave it, especially if you don't actually need to take it with you.

Blinds and light fittings should stay for free.

EldonAve · 16/11/2011 19:08

I'd probably go £400-500 for the fridge

Blinds and curtains depends on how many windows they are for

I don't think you need leave any of the items if they don't want to pay

pootlebug · 16/11/2011 19:50

As a buyer, I'd like the opportunity to buy the fridge (rather than leave me with a very specific shaped hole). I'd probably go for blinds if a reasonable price but not bother with curtains or light fitting unless quite cheap because usually I'd prefer to have them to my own taste.

For the fridge I'd expect £200-300 or so. For the blinds, not sure. We bought made-to-measure blinds from blindsuk.net and they were a heck of a lot cheaper than John Lewis etc. but good quality - so wouldn't want to pay a price based on the JL cost, if that makes sense.

When we bought, the fridge (American style, but several years older), several wooden blinds and some curtains were left but we weren't asked to pay for them.

Zeeky · 16/11/2011 19:57

The curtains and roman blinds are for 3 windows. The windows are all quite large in this house and not standard sizes, hence the reason we had to get them made specially!

The venetian blinds are for 4 windows, and again all strange sizes, so had to have them specially made.

Perhaps I should point out the strange window sizes to our buyers, as they may then prefer to buy our curtains instead of struggling to find ones to fit!

My sellers are trying to sell me their shit for £300 - truly shitty curtains and fridge and other cheap shitty bits - after I'm paying nearly full asking price for the house. I'm very, very tempted to pull out. We'll all lose money as it's very close to exchange but I think they are seriously taking the piss.

Sorry, didn't mean to digress - your stuff sounds good quality so I think you're entitled to ask for money.

BiscuitNibbler · 16/11/2011 20:26

If I was your buyer I'd refuse to pay extra, and expect you to take them.

A five year old fridge is worth nothing, Next home furnishings have no resale value and the curtains and blinds whilst useful are easy to replace cheaply if necessary.

If you don't have a use for the items why would you take them? It seems petty to me, and not worth antagonising your buyers. It will also be hassle for you to take these things down and make good any damage.

Zeeky · 16/11/2011 20:55

I will find a use for them, hopefully in our next house, or even if just to reuse the fabric to make cusion covers! I would rather that than leave them for free to people who are getting a total bargain for our house anyway! Our EA did make it clear to them that F&F would be charged separately. I am happy to take them with me and make good any damage. Just wanted to know what people were prepared to pay for fittings - by the sounds of it, not a lot Hmm

You will need to install a pendant in place of the chandelier - you won't get much for a 4 year old light from Next. I'd take the pedant personally.

Fridge - for convenience I'd pay £100, maybe £200 it's 5 years old, well beyond its guarantee period. We took our fridge with us and regretted it - it took up space in the garage and we only ever used it for beer.

Blinds - I'd be inclined only pay a nominal amount for privacy purposes, maybe £20 a pair/set.

Other people's taste is not something I value.

Chaotica · 16/11/2011 21:12

I just paid less than £500 for a new american fridge freezer. I agree with the others - if you don't want them, just leave them in the house. You're not going to get a lot for them.

Zeeky · 17/11/2011 07:39

I think I will just take most of it with me to re-use at some point. The blind and curtains are mostly neutral - cream. The chandelier took me ages to find one that I liked, so I will take it with me as I agree with comments here that other people won't value a Next 4yr old fitting much - i will def be able to use it in next house.

TBH I wouldn't want to pay much for other people's blinds and curtains as I prefer to choose my own, but I thought I would give them the option. When we moved in here there wasn't so much as a curtain pole, so we had to string up some shower curtains as a temporary measure in the bedroom. We will be leaving the curtain poles as I think it would be a bit mean to take them even though they were bloody expensive too!

OP posts:
Pannacotta · 17/11/2011 08:55

I think given the quality of the fittings and that the blinds were made to measure, it is totally fine to ask for payment, esp as they are getting the house for a good price.
I think asking a third of the original price is fair, if all is in very good condition still.
if they dont want to pay that then take them with you, am sure you could make some money on ebay for the blinds.
Do point out to the buyers that the windows are not standard size so they will need to have blinds custom made and they might decide to buy yours.

If the curtain poles were really dear then take them with you since they are classed as fittings I think, you can always replace with cheapo ones from B&Q if you dont want to leave them without.

typicalvirgo · 17/11/2011 10:40

£25 for the number on the door Shock now that is taking the piss.

In answer to your question, no, i don't regret taking all our curtains, some light fittings and even the fridge, we didn't know what type of house we would be buying in the new area, and knew that we would probably want to buy those things again.

As it has turned out, our sellers are leaving their fridge. its not a side by side style but its a smeg one and fits in well with the kitchen. we will probably end up using our big whirlpool as a big beer fridge in the garage.

Our sellers are leaving most of the curtains and most of the lamp fittings, thank goodness, as there is a huge chandelier in the hallway that i had palpitations at the thought of replacing. They are not all exactly to my taste but i know they were £££ .They are italian and the website doesn't even give a price LOL !

our buyers got a bargain house for a bargain price (and they knew it - we were relocated) so i feel comfortable taking all our fittings regardless of whether they will be used straight away in our next home.

OxfordGold · 17/11/2011 11:43

The thing to also consider is that if you start getting mean now don't expect them to do you any favours with regards to your Mail and despite Royal Mail forwarding and letting companies know - mail always finds it's way to yor old house. I was forwarding mailon for months - had the seller been mean with me, I wouldn't have bothered doing anything with it.

HarryHillatemygoldfish · 17/11/2011 18:06

I have a policy when buying and selling.

Don't piss off your buyers. Don't piss off your vendors.

Taking the items just because you are a bit pissed off that you undersold is rather mean and petty and may well come and bite you on the bottom at some point.

If a fridge freezer has cupboards into which it is built, it should stay for free, exactly the same as a built in cooker.
