Mid-range claw foot bath - not Fired Earth prices but good quality

After a single-ended claw foot bath and interested in finding brands which are mid price and good quality. I don't want to pay Fired Earth/ V&A prices but then again I'm happy to pay a bit more than Homebase if the quality is good.

We have a Bathstore one. It is about 5 years old, and still looks good. They always have discounts, and are pretty reasonable; we have been pleased with it.

We've just bought a Verona from Aston Matthews - £800 ish. Its lovely, and wrought iron so can be painted which is what we wanted.

foreverchangingname · 06/11/2011 17:04

I will check out both. Thanks. What sort of taps do you have?

www.castironbath.co.uk/ very good company, we paid £800 for ours.

greyvix · 06/11/2011 18:09

Looking at the other posts, I think Bathstore would look a bit cheap next to the other suggestions. Perhaps too much like Homebase and too little like Fired Earth!

Just been on their site. Not keen on the white feet.

Bit unsure re cast iron. What's it like to maintain?

We got a reconditioned, original cast iron one from ebay. I really dont like the modern plastic roll top baths.

Ours is painted farrow and ball apple green with black feet. Really easy to change the colour. I just wash it with normal spray on bathroom cleaner and a soft cloth.

fivegomadindorset · 06/11/2011 20:16

Cast iron very easy to maintain.

foreverchangingname · 06/11/2011 21:26

And are they very heavy? I mean does one have to worry about the floor being strong enough when the bath is full of water?

Bumping this

www.castironbath.co.uk/roll-top-baths/the-canterbury-double-ended-slipper-bath.html what do you all think of double ended slipper baths? Do they look a bit funny or nice? I'm only used to seeing the single ones.

OP posts:
Inghouls2 · 12/11/2011 20:39

we bought our bathroom from victorian bathrooms and it's really good quality at a really good price. Would definitely recommend them
Also, yes, you do need to consider weight, as a cast iron bath full of water is very heavy...we had a structural engineer check the load on our floor. If you are concerned, please pay for this advice, the last thing you want is a bath crashing through your ceiling.

foreverchangingname · 13/11/2011 20:52

Really need views on this:

Does it look odd as traditional slipper baths seem to have been single-ended and the double-ended ones are more like this:
www.castironbath.co.uk/roll-top-baths/cast-iron-baths/the-york-large-roll-top-bath.html

Am worried the more traditional ones will be to vertical and therefore not comfy to lie down in?

OP posts:
fivegomadindorset · 13/11/2011 21:07

We have the Canterbury one and love it.

foreverchangingname · 13/11/2011 21:12

That's really reassuring Fivego especially as I can't see the quality and will be buying online.

Did you get the white or silvery feet?

Also is it comfy to lie and have a lovely soak in? I am so glad I realised the other ones are too upright on the back and not likely to be comfortable.

OP posts:
fivegomadindorset · 13/11/2011 21:27

White, don't forget your taps and yes fell asleep in it yesterday.

foreverchangingname · 13/11/2011 21:31

Quite fancy silver feet myself.
Bathroom man is ordering everything so will source taps I think.

Just read that the whole thing about cast iron baths being too heavy for floors is a myth anyway. So that solves that. Will still get the builders to check just in case. Don't fancy being woken from my bathing slumber as the bath and me fall through the floor!

Because I am so huge I have to choose my bath very carefully, LOL.

Resurrecting an old thread here...

Anyone seen any images of a more traditional roll top bath, but with modern taps (preferably freestanding or wall-mounted) that they could link to? Anyone had this combo themselves or have any views on whether or not it works?

Its just that I love the look of the bath (having had more contemporary roll top baths in previous houses), but I will be going for contemporary sink taps and shower fittings and would like to check out some pictures before I decide whether it would work or not.
