eg here

Has anyone found anything like this they'd recommend?
I'd like something with a slightly smaller head and foot.

John Lewis has some other models

My parents have one like this in their spare room and it's very uncomfortable. There's a ridge where the mattresses join so make sure you try it out before buying.

dinkydoos · 03/11/2011 20:22

hi
we have the john lewis one riley one and its great. good quality mattresses on each bed
however agree with nocake, they arent a good double bed really. however they do present a good middle ground ie they can be used as 2 singles for when kids have friends staying but also can be put together (albeit in a sort of 2 single beds just close together way) for when have other visitors who are couples.

been a good solution for us

hope this helps!

Ikea Hemnes daybed. The drawer section slides out smoothly and you move one of the two mattresses onto it to make a double all one level.

Very comfy.

In my DC bedrooms they have the Laura Ashley bed. Very comfy to sleep in.

alice in DD rm

or this day bed

Is a futon not suitable? We had one in a spare room. Was never used as a sofa but it was an exceptionally comfortable double bed - when needed.

Redrubyblue · 04/11/2011 15:22

I agree that the 'join' in the middle of the matresses is very annoying.

Ilanthe · 04/11/2011 15:25

PIL have one of these, but the join between the mattresses is so poor that you can easily slip down between it.

CMOTdibbler · 04/11/2011 17:36

I'd much prefer sleeping on a quality airbed to one of those - friends have one and it is def not a double, just a single and a foldy bed

kando · 04/11/2011 17:40

Agree with lovethesea - my dsis has one of these daybeds and it's not uncomfortable at all. It's a huge bed so the "join" isn't a problem - perhaps because the other beds mentioned on here aren't as big as the IKEA one this is why they are so uncomfortable? Also with the IKEA one, it has storage drawers underneath .. an added bonus!

Auntiestablishment · 04/11/2011 18:48

I had an earlier incarnation of one of these from Argos years ago - has been great: 12 years and still going strong (except for cat scratches). The smaller bed is a wee bit small but fine for occasional. The bigger is a great everyday single which withstood about 10 years' daily use before being downgraded to the guest room.

PigletJohn · 04/11/2011 22:30

We've got one, came from John Lewis, you should consider it to be two single beds, not a double. On ours the lower mattress is a couple of inches shorter that the bed that it goes underneath, and only the upper one has a headboard.

BeatrixBlackMambaKiddo · 05/11/2011 01:25

I'm with CMOT - good airbeds are fab. We used one for 2 months during a relocation while waiting for our real bed to arrive.

I think they are great for spare bedrooms - it always seems such a waste to put a bed in a room when it's hardly used.

startail · 05/11/2011 01:31

DH and I shared a double air bed at weekends and it was so comfy I used it all week. (our university beds were dreadful).
don't get a cheap divan with a fold up bed under it if it's for serious adult use. My, she'd accept, rather large sister says the main bed on ours is not very comfortable.

angel1976 · 05/11/2011 08:49

My PILs have those and I HATE them with a passion. Really small and uncomfortable. I hate the gap in the middle and on the single, I always feel like I am 'perching' on the edge. If you have the space, get a double bed (if you want to use it for 2 people. If not, get a single and a trundle or something. Just not those.

RandomMess · 05/11/2011 08:55

I'm another one that would recommend the Hemnes Day Bed, friend has one and it's really really comfortable and the storage drawers are huge.
