Help me find my new kitchen

Looking for a new kitchen. Quite keen a something hand built solid wood and painted. Not too rustic or farmhouse.
Looking for classic with a modern twist I suppose.

Has anyone here used Roundhouse? They may be too modern and £££££ for me but keen to hear.

Also has anyone here used Kitstone or Unfitted?

Have not used Roundhouse but we seriously considered it. The quality was fantastic and you could go either modern or more traditional. In the end we decided we couldn't justify the price - we have a massive kitchen, but they really impressed us.

My new kitchen is underway!!! We have been replastered and are part way through the units being fitted so should be done within a couple of weeks.

I wanted a modern yet classic version of a painted kitchen, kind of shaker-ish but up-to-date. I got a local kitchen company to project manage it and they had the units specially made.

It is a thicker than normal door and painted in two colours, both F&B called tallow and bone (basically cream and a pale sagey greeny greyish colour)

Where in the country are you? If you are in the NW I would gladly share some companies we found.

Civiliz. Sounds good. Will go and get more info but may be too expensive.

Timidviper. Ooohh. Sounds right up my street. Unfortunately I am in London but would love to hear more any way.

Anyone else used Unfitted??

I think the guy said they came in around £10k more than off the shelf - they didn't go in for all the fancy over detailed fitted kitchen stuff which makes me want to vomit like Mark Wilkinson or Small Bone but they had good ideas and a firm design opinion - I liked that, they were most definitely kitchen designers with creactive flare as opposed to sales assistants who could use a design package to fit together some units - I met many of the latter. I still dream of their kitchens but I got my off the shelf kitchen at half the price that Roundhouse could do it and the compromise was worth it and probably only noticable by me.

I found Smallbone and Clive Christian too ornate for me but got some ideas from some of the plainer Mark Wilkinson ones. Magazines have some good ideas too and I built up a little collection of things I liked

I went to quite a few companies with a scale drawing of the kitchen (approx 5m square) showing doors, windows, etc and asked them for ideas before even progressing to the home visit stage, we ruled out several at this point if they were too standard i.e. wanted to tell us the kitchen that would fit rather than the kitchen we wanted.

We had 3 companies to the house to measure up and do detailed designs. One design we didn't like (it was far too modern and looked like a laboratory) and the final decision was between a wooden in-frame kitchen and a bespoke modern one, we went for the modern one as they managed to incorporate all the things I wanted and I really wanted pullout larder units which work better with doors on the front rather than in-frame IYSWIM

I don't know how the bespoke kitchens compare on price as the off the shelf designs didn't work for us. You also have to bear in mind that you are not always comparing like with like, our doors are thicker than standard and I noted the granite for worktops listed by one kitchen chain is thinner than the stuff I'm having.

Our kitchen company are also project managing the whole thing including boarding the ceiling, replastering, electrics, tiling and doing the floor as well as the units which takes out a lot of hassle for us

Timidviper. Thank you. Sounds fab. I will have a look at getting a couple of companies out to quote.

I got a tip on here a while back that when you get a design you should copy it and write on what would go in every unit and it often flags up the bits you need to add which was very useful to me and I am learning more every day as we find all the little queries and stuff as mine gets fitted.

If you need any help skandi feel free to pm me. I usually look in at mn every few days.
