My top tip is to buy the fittings yourself and go and look at them if you can.

Also you can get tiles v similar to Fired Earth tiles (from the same factory in Spain, they're identical) from Tons of Tiles in Plymouth. (FE quoted me £900, TOT were £250 iirc for Retro Metro tiles)

Make sure when you get quotes that you consider windows, ceilings, light fittings, built in cupboards, doors, floors. All very easy to miss out and then you get to the end and realise eg fitting a new light / blind wasn't included.

i wouldn't spend a lot on basin, baths etc...they all look the same once in...its the setting thats important

if any rooms are small get stuff wall hung...rather than on floor.....makes space look bigger

We did our bathroom 18 months ago - pics on my profile.

I bloody love my bathroom but we're moving next weekend; I shall miss it

Fitted furniture is ace as it hides everything away and looks so sleek. Big bath with taps up on the side so they don't get in the way. Concealed cistern and pipework look nicer and aren't a dusttrap.

We bought our suite, furniture, taps and tiles etc all at Wickes in their sale and had an independent fitter do it all including the tiling.

Thanks for the tips... Loving your before and after pics Sidge
just been looking at fitted furniture but not much choice.
Have a design a appointment at Wickes next week so any more tips would be fab. I hadn't even thought about the "furniture" until last week! But need it as so much junk essential stuff lives in the bathroom...

Is it just me or are a lot of the basins not a very practical shape!!??

Also, if you have small kids might be best to go for end taps so they sit away from the hot one rather than have them in the middle.

I agree there is a huge difference in quality glaze on the ceramics and the whites are different.
With baths if you go for acrylic make sure it's 6mm plus as some you can literally see the light through them so not going to last.

I like utopia furniture as really flexible with design/colour/layouts and Sottini.

Also if your looking at towel warming or feature radiators check the btu's are enough to warm your room unless you are having separate heating as chrome ones retain alot of heat so need to be large and therefore expensive but the coloured ones are more efficient so save money for other stuff.

bounty007 · 25/09/2011 14:26

thanks for the tips cowboylover. Googled the sites you suggested and some good stuff, although Im looking for more traditional stuff I think... Think there is underfloor heating going in all bathrooms so radiators should just be to keep towels warm.

If you're looking for more traditional stuff, have you looked at Imperial? They have a good range including some 1920s/30s style stuff which can look trad and contemporary at the same time IYSWIM. They also do taps, and you could try Samuel Heath for taps as well.

Imperial
Samuel Heath - have a look at Fairfield range of taps
