bathroom floor options

What do you have on your bathroom floor?

When I moved in the floor was painted white, we stripped and sanded but the floor isn't very pretty and some of the boards will have to be replaced. We're going to have a new toilet and bath put in and I'm considering repainting the floor but DH has suggested tiling. The only bathrooms I ever see with tiled floors are in hotels or houses abroad and I just really hate them.

is Lino a bad thing or are there other options?

Hmm I love tiled floors in a bathroom, especially stone. But they can be a bit chilly unless you splash out for underfloor heating.

Rubber is an option I've seen in quite a few bathrooms, maybe a bit more robust than lino?

Look at these people - they'll send samples www.colourflooring.co.uk

These floors are also nice and the company will send samples. Too pricey for us but very nice www.harveymaria.co.uk/

I'm not a fan of tiles in bathrooms after a concussion-inducing fall on a wet floor. I'd try painting the floor again first though.

I'd paint the floor again. Although I don't belong to the Farrow and Ball church they do a great range of colours in floor paints and they have been very hard wearing.

thank you :) DH is saying to me 'we have to think of what is best to do to sell the house not what we want' so I suggested laminate as I know he hates it. A tiled floor just wouldn't fit with the house which is small and cottage like. We are hoping to have a freestanding bath and I think a wooden floor would be much better.

Have a look at the Kardean range.

woven vinyl from the unnatural flooring company - looks a bit like seagrass/sisal (can never remember which is which) but is waterproof and hardwearing. To be fair, we've only had it a couple of months but it looks great and is surviving two small children very well so far.

Tiling is the best option for bathroom floors, it is clean, waterproof, and it looks sleek.
Am not fan of vinyl, it doesn't matter how well it has been put down, eventually it gives away especially around toilet bowl where it tends to be wet, same thing is really with floorboards in bathrooms, they can look good, but unless they are brand new floorboards and sealed professionally, they are not waterproof and in no time they will get wet, smelly and look scruffy.
Large stone tiles or tiles that look like real stone are really the best solution.
Good luckSmile

I think a painted wooden floor would look best given the style of your house (from what you say anyway), perhaps an off white/stone colour?
It woudl be cheaper to have a few boards replaced than putting in new flooring and sounds like it would be more in keeping too.
I think tiles are quite clinical and are cold to walk on and slippery too.

We have karndean parquet, it's laid like a parquet floor, and loads of people including wood floor enthusiasts thought it was real.

OriginalPoster · 01/09/2011 11:43

You can get underfloor heating with it, but not cheap

Ungratefulchild · 01/09/2011 11:43

We have a dark hardwood laid over crappy old floorboards. Looks fab and is very practical.

spingspong · 01/09/2011 11:49

We used Camaro, which is similar to Karndean. Very pleased with it, it looks/feels like wood and is a nice warm texture on your feet.

mum2twoloudbabies · 01/09/2011 13:36

Karndean/amtico derivative therefore. I had it in my last house in the ensuite for 6 years and it looked good as new. Have a mixture of tiles and laminate across bathroom/ensuites in new house hate both and can't wait to put karndean back down although between the two tiles are better.

FannyPriceless · 01/09/2011 13:44

Don't tile over a wooden floor! Seriously, I loved having wooden floorboards in the bathroom in our old house.

Tiles are cold, don't suit period properties, and I once knocked myself out on a tiled floor (had D&V and fell off the looBlush) so have an extra reason to hate them. You are lucky to have floorboards - make the most of them!

PeanutGallery · 01/09/2011 14:31

If you're going to have floorboards, make sure all the gaps are sealed properly, since otherwise water can get down between the gaps and ruin the ceiling below (and play havoc with the electrics if you have ceiling light fittings).

What peanut said. Vomit and wee are also hard to get out from between floorboards and under floor boards.
