Asking for a friend: is it possible to buy a 2 up 2 down house within commuting distance of London (pref to the west/south west) for £250,000?

bibbitybobbityhat · 26/08/2011 19:17

and if so, where?

It's not going to be a daily commute, btw, but I think my friend is hoping for somewhere less than 50 miles away.

all/any suggestions most welcome Smile.

£240k detached!

mid-terrace £210k

Plenty of 1960s/70s stuff if you want more space for your money.

Waterloo is about 40 minutes by train. And it's not under the flightpath Smile

ChippyMinton · 26/08/2011 21:16

this looks like a good one

character but further from the station

houseboat?

walton

Windsor

could be fabulous

Blu · 26/08/2011 21:17

A bit closer in, Streatham Vale, or the general SW16 area.

here or here or Norbury - near very good outstanding girls secondary, Norbury manor Streatham

Quick travel and lack of long commute possibly compensate for lack of leafiness......

ChippyMinton · 26/08/2011 21:18

Ascot, dahling

not quite Ascot

Ponders · 26/08/2011 21:23

could be fabulous one looks potentially brilliant (but £250K before they start Confused)

love the dog in the Windsor one Grin

fivegomadindorset · 26/08/2011 21:52

Love the houseboat

bibbitybobbityhat · 26/08/2011 22:35

These are absolutely brilliant. Thank you so much everyone. My diminuitive friend will be incredibly grateful (keep 'em coming if you have any more).

And Blu - no fucking way are we in zone 3 SW London with those prices!!!

I think my understanding of property prices has gone rather wrong due to living in a ridiculously overpriced poncetastic ghetto these past few years.

eh?
don't quite follow. (not necessarily advocating the areas I searched - but just to say it is possible)

I want to live in that houseboat Envy

Ponders · 26/08/2011 22:45

I liked the houseboat too but wouldn't want to live on one Grin

There are a few areas of greater London that would fit the bill - I agree with CristinatheAstonishing that Kingston and Tolworth are out, but the surrounding areas would be good - Epsom, Esher, or even New Malden (which is very fast into central london at 20 minutes).

Or otherwise, Beckenham in Kent is very good value and is very quick into central London. Might squeeze something out of brockley/ sydenham if she was lucky.

Bucks generally is more reasonable - Amersham and Chesham are on the metropolitan line which is apparently slow but is prob doable if it's not every day.

Blu · 26/08/2011 22:47

hasn't the new overground sent Brockley prices high?

Ponders · 26/08/2011 22:49

ooooh - look at \link{http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-31211308.html\this one in Chesham}

what does "guide price" mean when it's not an auction?

bibbitybobbityhat · 26/08/2011 22:51

Blu - was just surprised at what you could get for £250,000 well within the boundary of proper London. Tis all.

I am determined to show her that life goes on if you live in the wilds of south or west London cos she is moving from Kilburn and you know what North Londoners are like ...

narmada · 26/08/2011 22:51

blu how right you are. Has been a while since I looked around there. Blimey, it's pricey these days.

nailak · 26/08/2011 22:51

oops here

Ponders · 26/08/2011 22:53

\link{http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-29676064.html?premiumA=true\another lovely house in Chesham} £240K & has 2 bedrooms plus attic, & bathroom upstairs & shower room down.

I want it!

Blu · 26/08/2011 22:57

Bibbity - oh, I see!

You can get 3 bed houses in Streatham Hill (which is even almost desirable) and closer in, and hilly and leafy for under £250k as ex-local authority houses. In low-rise development opposite an 'outstanding' primary and a nature garden!

You don't get nature gardens in Kilburn!

bibbitybobbityhat · 26/08/2011 23:04

Crikey!

Although I am afraid I cannot feel good towards Streatham atm as I got stuck in hideous traffic jam there today after far too many hours in the car in a journey which also included Basingstoke town centre as mentioned previously in this thread Smile.

I think df, hurtling towards her half century, is suddenly thinking it might be nice to live somewhere with a nature garden, rather than in an ex-council flat of Lilipution dimensions on a crime-ridden High Street.

You can definitely buy something 2 bed for £250k in Epsom area (I know someone who sold one a few months ago for just under that)

Also around Walton on Thames (a colleague is looking in that area for a 3 bed for £250k and keeps finding lovely but too small for her 2 beds)

will see if I can find some to link to...
