Roof and windows

So our new house has a horrible tiled roof with really horrid orange coloured tiles - we'd prefer some nice slate - any ideas how much it would cost to re-do a roof in slate? Ballpark figures welcome - I mean are we talking £5k or £20k. Its a detached 4 bed reasonable size house.

And any recommendations for a good windows company - we're after quite modern timber windows and in the south west.

Thanks

We were given estimates of 12-14K to re-roof with felt and slate. Might be worth checking if you want slates which are man-made or natural? I understand the natural ones are more expensive.

We're in the South East. The property in question is a largish 2 bedroom semi-detached.

Aha - thank you - so probably will be nearer the £20k mark.

We had ours done last year and the quotes we had varied from about 20k to over 40k. In the end we went with man-made slates, which worked out much cheaper than proper slates - I think the final bill was about 17k. They look fine. The roof wasn't at all complicated though, just up one side and down the other, though the cost of the scaffolding was a fairly big chunk of the total iirc.

And were you pleased midnight? We're doing a big renovation or will be doing and its purely for aesthetic reasons rather than the roof is leaking . . .

Yes, it looks fine. The 'slates' aren't as nice as real ones, IMO, very uniform so less 'character' iykwim, but at 20k cheaper I'm not complaining. Our house is divided into three flats so we're actually not under the roof directly, but it was leaking badly and gets battered by winds so it really had to be done. We were lucky because we managed to get a 93% grant just before our council stopped offering them - it is a huge expense otherwise.

If anyone could recommend a roofing company in SE I would be grateful. We have had one quote from a bloke who just wrote a figure on the back of his business card, and another fully detailed quote but we now need to check again, to try and get the best deal.

Thanks
