Surrey has everything a woman of a certain class could ask for. Surrey is home to the top private primary schools in Britain, beautiful golf and tennis clubs, riding facilities, forests, hills, superb shopping in towns like Guildford, Godalming and Dorking, haute cuisine dining in restaurants for every taste, quick and easy train access to the City, Holborn, Bloomsbury or Harley Street if DH is employed in finance, the bar, academia or medicine. Simply paradise. I couldn't imagine why any woman who has been blessed with bounty could want to reside anywhere else.

From the OP's profile -

"MyMumsnet

The basics
She lives in Surrey."

Pwahaha. No shit Sherlock.

Applauds.

Grin

Too funny.

sixtiesqueen · 19/07/2011 19:13

this poster is a hoot! I love her!

Love, I live in the regions of the north. Obviously there are no doctors/lawyers or academics in these parts - we don't need them as we don't get sick, divorced or educated (too clever already).

And we all eat Greggs sausage rolls straight from the bag as well.

narmada · 19/07/2011 19:23

Oh, it's you again, trying to flush out a few quotes (probably) for a book or something.

SybilBeddows · 19/07/2011 19:44

a book about Surrey?

narmada · 19/07/2011 19:53

The OP seems to have more than a passing interest in the home counties and the british class system - she's turning into a bit of a regular poster on the subject.....

I live in one of the most exclusive parts of Surrey and yet (whisper it) we bought our own furniture.

PST7777 · 20/07/2011 11:42

It never ceases to amaze me as to the level of vulgarity the lower middle-class will stoop to in their jealousies of their social betters. As for where I live in Surrey, nevermind--and no, it's not Haslemere. I was merely trying to disuade my sister-in-law from moving her, my darling brother and their family out of Surrey and back into London. She conceded Haslemere was another option, so I tried to accentuate the beauty of that town. Mind you, I don't live terribly far from Haslemere or Godalming.

I'm sorry if so many of you have such envious regards for Surrey and its wonderful inhabitants. I suppose you should just be happy with your bleak little lower middle-class lives, living in your drab dormitory towns in such dreadful places like Essex and Herts.

OP posts:
DamselInDisarray · 20/07/2011 11:50

I'd suggest that you see a bit more of the world but really it's best for all the rest of us if you just stay where you are far away from me.

VivaLeBeaver · 20/07/2011 11:55

Do you know I don't think I've ever been to Surrey.

Never visited, don't know anyone there, never even driven through it. Until reading this thread I couldn't have named a single town in Surrey.

Doesn't look like I'm missing much. From the list of places in Surrey it certainly does look like Dullsville Suburbia. No nice countryside or tourist attractions.

VivaLeBeaver · 20/07/2011 11:56

What is a "woman who has been blessed with bounty"

I like Bounty bars, only the dark chocolate ones mind.

Pendeen · 20/07/2011 11:58

VivaLeBeaver · 20/07/2011 12:00

Nope, don't think I've been to Essex or Herts either. There is life north of the Watford Gap you know. You wouldn't get me to live in the South for anything, no envy here I can promise you. Pity more like.

I do remember a thread from years ago about "Escaping from Surrey". It was very funny. The OP had got out and she said Surrey nearly killed her it was so horrible, full of bitchy, snobby women. Guess she was right.

TheCrackFox · 20/07/2011 12:05

I went to Guildford on a day out but it was shut.

DamselInDisarray · 20/07/2011 12:12

Wait I just saw the brilliant sociological analysis about the 4 main upper middle class pursuits. Academia, finance, law and medicine.

You know, there are plenty of not upper middle class people in all of these areas. There are even people from working class backgrounds. Shock

mummytime · 20/07/2011 12:20

Oh no you don't live in my town do you? No can't do, all the posh people I know have far better manners than you.
We even have pockets of deprivation.

To those of you outside Surrey; it is nice, we aren't all snobs. Advantages: nice countryside, close to London, good schools (even State ones). Disadvantages: very high standards for schools, lots of pushy parents, you can feel poor on a six figure salary, house prices are very high, not enough school places.

BTW most Medics and Academics I know have kids in State education (until at least 11) as its too expensive otherwise; business people do often afford private but that does include the local builder.

VivaLeBeaver · 20/07/2011 12:29

I'm in medicine, I must be a prestigious professional . Or maybe I'm a woman blessed with bounty. Who knows?

minipie · 20/07/2011 12:36

Oh, it's you again OP. Look forward to your next gem.

Cocoflower · 20/07/2011 12:36

"No nice countryside or tourist attractions."

Erm, no matter what you think of Surrey that really, really isnt true! The Surrey hills are area's of outstanding natural beauty for a start so that is not a fair comment.

Most people who live in Surrey do so because of the need to commute to central London or they grew up there- not because it better than other counties. Kent is just gorgeous in parts and has lovely old buildings and we love visiting there; and the North has beautiful stunning countryside (and Betty's tearooms :( ). Harrogate is more expensive than many parts of Surrey.

Isn't the most beautiful villages meant to be in Kent (Arudel or something like that) and somewhere beginning with L, like Ludlow I think up somewhere in the North?

FruitSaladIsNotPudding · 20/07/2011 12:39

The op is taking the piss, right??

Anyway, Surrey is VILE. All of it, since this is the thread for sweeping generalisations. We left for London four years ago and have never looked back, despite paying far more for a far smaller house.

Jojocat · 20/07/2011 12:41

viva - If you've never been to Surrey how do you know what it is like? The part of Surrey outside the M25 is not surburbia. There are some lovely towns with good state schools and lots of lovely walks in the Surrey Hills (and horse riding of course Grin). The cost of property is a definite drawback.

munstersmum · 20/07/2011 12:44

I have Bounty on the kitchen side - am I blessed too? Can't be though, live oooop north.

VivaLeBeaver · 20/07/2011 12:47

I've looked Surrey up on the internet, seen photos, etc. Sorry, maybe some of the countryside is nice enough but it can't compare with the Peak District, Yorkshire Dales near me.

And if I was thinking of nice areas down South there are a couple of dozen of places that would cross my mind before the Surrey Hills - New Forest, Chilterns, Suffolk coast, etc.

Concordia · 20/07/2011 12:48

thank goodness i'm not blessed with bounty because yorkshire is far more beautiful and full of straight talking lovely people (sure there are some nice people in surrey but think alot of them might look down on me for not having married a rich enough DH)

NerfHerder · 20/07/2011 12:51

Goodness- does Xenia live in Surrey then? and LeQueen? Hmm

Pootles2010 · 20/07/2011 12:52

I'm surely not the only one who read the title as 'Surrey - home to britains' most pretentious professionals'?

And that's before I'd even read her post.

Cocoflower · 20/07/2011 12:52

Well I think the Surrey Hills is stunning. Leith hill in bluebell season...

Seems a lot of others do seeing as a number of movies are shot aroud the area's.

You really should visit an area before writing it off.
