Ok, so I've got to start on the great kitchen replacement project. It is a long, thin west-facing room in a Victorian terrace. There's no separate utility room, so the washing machine and tumble drier have to be accommodated. But it is a big room with space for a full size dining table and chairs as well.

What do I need, what must I avoid - esp layout wise?

Thank you v much for any thoughts.

These are all great - enormously helpful, thanks ever so.

In terms of layout, the "triangle principle" is a must to ensure efficient traffic flow between cooker, fridge and sink. Good luck!

Realise I may be going against the ride here BUT....

Agree with poster who didnt like the corner carousel unit - pointless.

I dont like my oak worktops...not practical at all - you cant get them wet!!! They need regular oiling and mark so very easily.

I have an enamel farmhouse sink which is great as it fits so much in but it doesnt hold any heat at all so you cant leave things to soak. Much preferred my stainless steel one!

I wouldnt have wooden venetian blinds again, either.

I dont like my range oven. I have never used all 6 burners (so 2 are pointless) and have never used the plate warmer and the grill about 4 times in 4 years. It takes 2-3 hours to strip it down and clean it!!

I do like the integrated appliances...F/F, dishwasher etc

I do like my french doors into the garden.

I like the fact I have a separate utility area.

ours is being put in this week or next, so we are kitchen-less at the moment (which is bloody grim, btw).

I am really looking forward to having space for everything after years in teeny rental properties. Although our new place is small, we've designed in a lot of storage space, which means we may occasionally see our worktops in the new kitchen!

The other things we have designed in are:
more sockets - on both sides of the kitchen! enough for kettle, toaster, microwave, and food processor to have their own sockets, plus a spare for other items which we use less frequently.

multiple bins - so we have space for bins in a drawer rather than just under the counter where a small child can get to it!

a storage space for the washing rack and ironing board. Sounds stupid, but we don't have any cupboards in the house, and in our old place, these things were propped against the wall. I'm looking forward to being able to put them away after use!!

I don't like the hatch into the dining room - if we had been better off, we'd have knocked it through to give an archway or door, but we're saving that for when we can afford an extension (our kitchen is teeny tiny).

and we haven't got a washing machine yet, so I'm still debating whether to get a washer or washer-drier. but life without a washing machine is surprisingly exhausting!

In terms of planning, don't forget your "work triangle" to optimise movement between cooker-fridge-sink.

Sorry about double posting on work triangle. Wasn't sure first message had been successfully posted. Duh!
