Monmouth anyone ?

We are considering relocating and just wondered if anyone could tell me where we should be looking in Monmouth ? I would like the children to be independant and not relying on me for lifts completely so the centre of things would be ideal, I've just put Monmouth into rightmove and got 200 properties so I need to narrow it down.
Also which of the schools are considered better ? Senior and primary as that will have a major bearing on where we live.
Thank you very much

The comprehensive is pretty good. (Two very posh private schools) Unfortunately, Monmouth is getting very rough and there was a recent attack on the news. Think most of the trouble comes from the areas over the river - there has been problems for years and years as long as I can remember and some town centre not nice at night.

Personally Im not keen as its sort of plonked in the middle of know where, with a very busy dual carriageway ploughing through - there is no train station and it quite a distance from Newport/Cardiff which means a slow bus journey especially for the children when they want to escape! I dont find it that friendly against say Abergavenny. The Waitrose is small and the carpark is a nightmare! No Tescos or Asda. It used to be quite foodie but like many towns these lovely shops have gone.

I would rather Usk, Abergavenny, Cwmbran areas. Leading down to Cardiff and outskirts of Newport.

I agree with Bacon (We weren't all posh at the other schools though :) ).

Monmouth has gone down hill over the years. Unless you have a particular reason for going there I would look at other towns either further into Wales or towards Ross or Hereford.

Whereever you go check for flooding. Parts of Monmouth get flooded ( although it is generally the rugby pitches and the areas around the bottom of the town).

Skelleybones - we are now considering a relocation and wondered if you did make the move to Monmouth ? Hopefully everything went to plan and I would appreciate your views as a 'new-comer' if you did move as this is one of the areas we are considering.

Like you I have children that would go to both primary and secondary schools and would like them not being reliant on me for lifts and somewhere they could ideally walk to school.

Many thanks :-)

I actually think Monmouth is a lovely place and I think you need to go and visit!! A lovely mix of stores from m and s , wait rose, joules, fat face etc and independents. I think the other posters are painting quite a bleak pictures Shock osbaston has a lovely primary school and is a short walk into town.

I have 2 children in the comprehensive school and both have done extremely well.

Great location ....around 20 min drive to Newport and 50 to Cardiff.

Used to live in Monmouth (moved about 4 years ago). I lived on the new (ish) housing estate close to Overmonnow primary school, about 15 minutes walk from the town centre. I did not find Monmouth to be rough at all. The town centre is lovely - a mix of independent and chain stores. Overmonnow primary was very nice and Osbaston also has a good reputation. The comprehensive school is fine - I know a couple of families who are quite hard to please and their children are happy and doing well academically, there.

Public transport is terrible - no train station, but the town itself has a lovely leisure centre, gyms, sports facilities, shops, doctors etc, even a little cinema/theatre.

Abergavenny (where I grew up) is rapidly going downhill, so I would avoid and the schools in Cwmbran/Newport are horrible and I would not send my children to them. Usk is okay, but there is nothing there really.

I think Monmouth is lovely. I only moved because I was pg with dc 4 and wanted to live closer to my mum.

I heartily recommend Crickhowell, if you specifically wanted Wales. The schools are lovely.
