Colour scheme ideas for an 8 y/o boys bedroom?

bibbitybobbityhat · 21/05/2011 13:47

We are going to decorate ds's bedroom. It is large (about 14ft x 9ft) and fairly bright, has a window looking on to the garden and another out to the side.

I'd like to do one wall in a dark colour and the others lighter, or is this now naff?

Any ideas?

tia

My son's a little older - approaching 10 - and we're in the process of doing his bedroom.

He loathed his loft bed and generally chose to sleep in his brother's bunk beds.

So he got to choose for himself what he wanted. He chose a double bed - from Argos - the leather looky likey one - with drawers underneath. He asked for brown and cream bedding, fluffly cushions and a throw!

And he wants his walls painted brown and cream!

Clearly not a little boy any more.

My 7 year old, on the other hand, now has two bright apple green walls and two bright orange ones. Sounds odd but looks really nice (I saw it on a tv makeover prog) and bunk beds with Simpsons bedding.

Bright apple green and bright orange? Sounds funkyyyyy!

Since I am incredibly shallow and selfish thinking about possibly moving in the next couple of years, I wonder if I shouldn't just go down the neutral route but then I think, bless ds, he has never had a room of his own, his sister has just moved out to her own room which we decorated specially for her.

My soon to be 7 year old son's bedroom is about to be painted in pebble (pale grey) and am having a blind made in a fabric with stars on it - sort of cream background with red/blue/grey stars. Am going for a sort of Ralph Lauren look [poncey]

my ds age 7 has plain cream walls, cream wood wide slat venitians, dark wood floor, dark indian wood furniture and cath kidston cowboy bed set which is red /green on cream.
im on the lookout for rug and headboard for him to add depth.
ive kept everything neutral and bought classic wood furniture so hopefully will only have to change bedset as he grows.

smashingtime · 24/05/2011 12:29

We're just about to do ds's room who is 7. I'm very restricted by a pink (yes pink!) carpet so we have to go down the neutral route but I saw some great colour combinations for those who have an easier colour scheme to match. B&Q range have a khaki green colour with a cream which looks great, also a dark blue/cream combination. Whilst I'm not a mad fan of feature walls, I thought these would be great for boys rooms. They also have a chalkboard paint which kids can draw on and some really funky bright colours in their range too!

That's where we bought our bright colours - DS2 was 6 at the time and we let him have a say in which colours he wanted. I know that soon enough he will grow up and want something less whacky and more sensible - so I want him to enjoy being a little boy for as long as possible.

We are doing DS's too. He is 10 though. He has picked a fairly bright red for one wall. Need to decide what colour to do the other walls. He already has a darkish wood double bed and two sets of bedding - one red/white checked and one blue/white check. So we are sticking with red/white and blue I think. Carpet is a pale neutral and he already has a red rug.

MrsCampbellBlack - that fabric sounds lovely. Where did you get it? I was thinking of stripes but stars sounds cooler.

sydenhamhiller · 25/05/2011 11:34

Mrs Campbell-Black - just wanted to say, love the name! Just got it. (Had such a crush on him when I was 14....)

MrsCampbellBlack · 25/05/2011 12:05

Sydenhamhiller Smile - he was my crush too

On the bedroom front - DS's walls are now going to be f&B pitch blue - a lovely colour but much darker than I'd have chosen - but hey its what he wants and with white iron bed and white wooden furniture it will look lovely I hope.

Personally not into feature walls and they are considered a little 90's I think - well on mn at any rate Wink

Buda · 25/05/2011 13:08

I had a crush on him too. Sigh. Must re-read.

That sounds lovely. I need to find a light colour for the walls that are not blood red. It's meant to be Arsenal red. Cue painter almost downing tools as he is a Spurs fan. Smile

Not sure if you missed my question about the fabric but it sounds lovely. Would you mind telling me where you got it?

walesblackbird · 25/05/2011 13:11

If you've got the footie shirt take it to B&Q and get the paint men to colour match it.

I did it with a pillow case once and it worked really well.

Buda · 25/05/2011 13:13

Wall is already painted thanks wales. He picked the colour. I don't think he will mind it not being an exact match.

fifi25 · 25/05/2011 13:17

Ive just done my friends feature wall and put the stripey paper on sideways. It looks really nice. My MIL is doing the kids room at hers like this with the lemon grey and white stripe. You can get it in blue shades from BnQ or wallpaper central on line. Ive got a flowery feature wall and i dont think its 90's. I also used the paint match at b&q to math paint to feature wall paper Smile

I'm just about to do my DS bedroom & although younger (5), I'm keen to avoid anything too young or themed so have gone for on a gunmetal grey (F&B Plummett but Dulux colour match Wink) on one wall with bright white on the others but have got some star wars wall stickers. I'm trying to find some bright bedding & curtains to inject some colour & make it a bit more fun so he actually likes it

MrsCampbellBlack · 25/05/2011 16:31

Here's the fabric I got - from a company called fabric mills in Bath.

Oh I liked plummett too - was a toss up between that and pitch blue - apparently pitch blue is more tardis-like so was therefore the winner Hmm

MadameCastafiore · 25/05/2011 16:34

DC is 6 and we recently did his room with fab wallpaper which will be a bit young for your son as it was covered in shapes of dinosaurs (on the front of Aspace Catalogue just got through the post for reference!) - paper is mid blue with brown dinosaurs and so have done brown curtains and plain dye bed lining from John Lewis - looks good - colour scheme is neither babyish or too grown up.

SciFiFan · 25/05/2011 16:38

We recently did my 8 year old DS's room - he has three walls that are light grey and one in slate grey (almost black). We accesorised with black floating shelves and a light grey carpet.

I was a bit worried about the slate grey wall but it looks really good and DS loves it.

Buda · 25/05/2011 16:53

Thanks MrsCB! That's lovely.

And not too far away - we are in Taunton.

Buda · 25/05/2011 17:02

Oh well. Back to the drawing board. Showed DS. He said no. I asked why. He replied that he is not 2! Ouch!

No taste!

bigTillyMint · 25/05/2011 17:05

DS's room is bright - any colours seem fine in a bright room.

DS chose a rather bright blue for all his walls and red for curtains. His bedding is either Arsenal themed (thanks MIL!) or red/white/blue themed.

However, you can't see the walls now as they are plastered in footy posters from Match of the DayGrin

WhatsWrongWithYou · 25/05/2011 17:12

DS2 is 10 and he has bright lime green walls, red gingham curtains and a pop art/Andy Warhol-style screenprinted cars duvet. Boring Neutral carpet.

I kind of think 'rules' regarding feature walls etc don't apply where kids are concerned; it's their gaffe after all and I can't believe prospective buyers would be put off by bright colours - as long as it's well done - if the rest of the house is subtle.
