DIY Loft insulation tips

After a survey by an energy saving company I have been told they cant insulate my loft without bringing up all the boarding and carpet and that I would lose the floor as storage

So in my newly divorced independent mindset I have decided to buy a roll of insulation and put it where it isnt boarded

I have a mask and a saw Grin

Any tips or things I wont have thought of (DIY novice)

Thanks

Hi, the only tip i have really is to wear something that covers all your skin, giving the fibreglass no chance to get on your body will save you from days of scratching and rashes later, also just wear goggles, breathing mask and strong gloves.

Also the insulation can never be too thick so just keep piling it on where you dont have any and you should be ok, good luck x

If you have a water tank and a heating top up tank try to insulate the sides and top cover , do NOT put insulation of any kind under the water tanks.

My DH assures my that after you've finished the best thing is to have a cold shower first. As a hot shower opens up all the pores and makes the fibres irriate your skin as they have a tendancy to creep through clothes. Otherwise, just as everyone else says basically. Have fun!

Thanks for the tips.

Can I just ask conculainey why not to insulate under the tanks up there ?

Not looking forward to this at all and a cold shower afterwards eek !

Do you know if there's any insulation under the boards you have? If there is you could just as easily put a second layer of boards on the existing and relay the carpeting. (Is what we've done.) You should also leave any electrical cables on top of the insulation and a gap around the edges rather than totally packing the loft out.

Re: conculainey she is quite right. The reason for not insulating under any tanks because heat from the house will be prevented from keeping the tanks from freezing but insulating over them will reduce the risk.

Make sure you don't push the insulation into the eaves (that's where the roof meets the ceiling) because it may block ventilators and so increase the risk of condensation in the roof space.
