As the title says....

We are looking to get a new sofa to replace our current sun damaged ikea one. Thinking Next or M&s perhaps but not sure what else is good?

Thanks.

We bought one in DFS when DD was a baby and I have spent the best part of the last 10 years sitting on it. Was £££ though.

Have just been back for a sofa bed. I went to look at one I'd seen half-price online, but didn't like it. I think we bought the most expensive one in the shop in the end, so we'd better get some visitors to our new house!

I still love the Next ones we bought about 5 years ago - only thing is it has squishy cushions zipped onto the arms and when the kids jump on them from a distance, a couple of them have ripped a bit. If only I were handy with a needle...

Has the Next sofa lasted well? What type do you have?

Yes, they have (3 seater + 2 seater). Don't know what type they are - nearest thing today would probably be the Hampstead, but I have it in a beige biscuit fabric. About to get them cleaned as a bit grubby at the front of the cushions. No wear at all on the fabric.

I used to have a Next one and now have M&S ones. I don't know whether its the brand or the cost which is important - am tempted to conclude that you get what you pay for wherever you get it from. Off the top of my head, paid about £700 I think for the Next one about 8 years ago - we gave it to friends when we changed the decor, they still have it and it still looks great and has retained its cushioning / shape / support. We bought 2 M&S ones about 3 years ago - got both of them on an offer / furniture sale and paid about £600 for the 2 of them. They are definitely not as good as the Next one - have retained their shape / fabric is great but not very supportive at all, tip to the side and feel like you're sinking quite low when you sit on them.

i ended up getting mine off the great universal catalogue as i knew what i wanted and that was the only place i found it. its a leather corner suite sofa, it cos me £1000 was quite expensive but is 7 years old now and still looks brand new, kids can't stain the fabric and most mess just wipes off. i definatly think you get what you pay for.

I've had fKendal rom Laura Ashley for 9 years now (2 x 2 seaters), and they're still going strong. I had 20% off i think, but there is more or less always a sale on. Exact price depends on your choice of fabric/leather and varies by about £300 per sofa.

I've just bought two huge Abbey sofas from M&S (with 40% off) and they're really comfortable too.

MollysChamber · 17/05/2011 14:27

I will never, ever buy another sofa from M&S. First ones we got 14 years ago were fab and only replaced because the style was starting to look a bit dated. The new ones (well 3 or 4 years old) are AWFUL. The fabric is fine but the frames are cheap rubbish. Started feeling like they needed replaced after little more than two years but grudge doing it because they weren't cheap. Numerous complaints and they have sent someone out to fix them but no better.

The quality just isn't there any more.

we bought 2 m&s abbey sofas in 2001, they have been with us through 4 house moves and still look really good and feel nice to sit on.

thisisyesterday · 21/05/2011 21:34

we have a multiyork one and it's FABULOUS!
it cost a lot, but I am so glad we spent the extra and went with them. it's bombproof!

SwedishEdith · 21/05/2011 21:52

Bought an M&S Abbey one on ebay for £120 about 4 years ago. Owner claimed it was only 2 years old. We find it really uncomfortable. Seat cushions always need plumping up and are really unsupportive

Jacaqueen · 21/05/2011 22:29

12 years ago I spent an obscene amount of money on a Derwent sofa. Thankfully it still looks fantastic and I still love it.

Also have a Laura Ashley leather sofa (Ashton?) which only cost about £600 in the sale. Love it.

LadyGoneGaga · 23/05/2011 12:31

Have a pair of Furniture Village sofas (a three and a two). Brown leather so don't show any mess at all and will wipe clean Grin. Cost me about £800 4 years ago and still going strong.

Tetrad. cost about £3000 3 years ago. very pleased but next time will get a Dewent or similar. You pay you get. I will be searching e-bay for my family room as I want a huge leather one. Leather works best for our lifestyle, very dusty, grubby children and dog.
