that when ever i have done any painting (satinwood or gloss) i have always searched high and low for a non plastic container to soak the brush in. (you know....that coffee jar that sits on the window sill in the kitchen for 5 months until you end up throwing the congealed mass out, brush and all...)

has to be a non plastic container doesnt it. of course it does.....

penny dropped tonight as i was washing the satinwood off my hands with white spirit....in a plastic bottle.

DOH.

I don't understand. Could you explain please.

Cornflakemum · 13/05/2011 11:41

I think Vicar is saying that she had some misplaced belief that white spirit HAD to be sued in a glass bottle, so as not to erode plastic or something?

AMumInScotland · 13/05/2011 11:50

Snigger Grin - it's funny how you get these ideas so ingrained in your mind that you just can't see the reality of it!

ThatVikRinA22 · 13/05/2011 12:02

i feel quite a pillock! all these years of tipping the dreggs out of coffee jars...i have no idea what i thought would happen if i dared to use something plastic...

someone made an even more sensible suggestion to use the cheapest of cheap brushes then chuck them....
i hate cleaning brushes.

well, cheap brushes can be annoying if they shed a lot of bristles while you work.

LOL @ plastic container thing.

AMumInScotland · 13/05/2011 12:13

I bought a dozen cheap 1 inch brushes and throw them out now - I find if you push the bristles back and forth a bit before you start painting, the loose ones usually fall out at once, instead of while you're painting.

gointhruchanges · 13/05/2011 12:25

I stored White spirit in a plastic milk carton, it started to eat through the plastic. Perhaps itches to be a certain type?

manchurian · 13/05/2011 12:26

That's why I only ever use water based paints - no need for white spirit in the first place!

bullet234 · 13/05/2011 16:42

Ahh, I see. Thank you.

MerryMarigold · 13/05/2011 22:32

Thanks for enlightening me. I always thought it had to be glass (it's inherited from my Dad, I don't do enough of it myself). Of course, the bottle is plastic...but there are so many different TYPES of plastic, you'd better be using the same sort Wink.

DaisySteiner · 14/05/2011 08:48

I would also recommend using the water-based satinwood or gloss. Smells so much better and dries much faster. You can just rinse the brushes out under the tap too.

ThatVikRinA22 · 14/05/2011 10:01

can you get water based satinwood???? ive never seen it. i would much prefer it - i hate the smell and hate cleaning the brushes (and me!) in white spirit even more.

where do you get water based satinwood? im v v interested! im going through the whole house. done my bedroom DS bedroom and hall/stairs/landing so far but many rooms still to go!

We got Focus own-brand but you can get Dulux and Crown I think from most DIY places. Primer too.

ThatVikRinA22 · 14/05/2011 10:31

our Focus is closing Sad and B&Q have bought it, but i searched and searched, they had very little in the way of satinwood let alone water based one....but i shall keep looking. thanks - i had no idea you could get it it! well...you learn something new everyday! cheers.

DaisySteiner · 14/05/2011 10:54

I heard Focus had gone into administration (ours is/was totally shit, I used to phone dh if I couldn't locate an item rather than try and locate an elusive member of staff!) I hope B&Q buy it or we will be about 10 miles from the nearest DIY store Shock

manchurian · 14/05/2011 18:53

If you want to spend a bit more, all of Farrow and Ball's woodwork paints (Estate Eggshell/Dead Flat/Full Gloss) are water based.

Foxinthewoods · 14/05/2011 19:13

I dishwash my jars from pasta sauce - anything really and save them for paintbrush jobs. The brush cleaner stuff by dulux I think it is, is very good for cleaning glossy brushes

wonkylegs · 14/05/2011 20:59

Has to be the right type of plastic, last week hubby melded a plastic cup to the utility room sink cleaning brushes....mmmmm blue gunky mess , funny he didn't seem to be too keen to clean it up

ThatVikRinA22 · 14/05/2011 21:18

ah, so maybe im not imagining the glass thing after all! DH did try to remind me that i have melted something cleaning brushes many moons ago but i dont remember doing it - but maybe thats where the idea that i had to have a glass receptacle came from.....

just got a farrow and ball colour chart. love it. hate the price. love the colours.
