Which oil do you recommend? My sil suggests osmo which seems to be a hard wax kind of finish. Jamie Oliver says cooking oil. Just googled and found something called tung oil.

Confused

I'll probably be even more confused after this!!

Tung oil is the major constituent in Danish Oil which is the most common treatment.

Ah! Thank you. My mum said not to use Danish oil!! Oh heck, it's a minefield!

I thought linseed oil, but either boiled or non boiled, not sure which

I use sunflower oil. Lots of it. It is cheap, and you don't need to worry about any residues getting on food.

Thistle does that give a shiny surface to it? Do you rub it in with a cloth?

Definitely osmo here I always use it and if done well and consistently the wood stays like new!

It is slightly glossy but not shiny. If the surface is new, you need to put lots on. Spread it out with a wodge of kitchen towel but leave a thick layer to sink in over night. Repeat this 4 or 5 times. It seems a lot, but will make a really water resistant finish. Even around the sink it is not affected by water lying on it.

osmo - researched extensively before buying several years ago - and was v happy with it.
