Help me choose tiles for my new kitchen!!

I have a new kitchen going in and have to get some tiles tomorrow! And I think I know what I'm going for but now I'm panicking!

The cupboard doors are cream gloss slab with walnut worktops. The room is very small but with plenty of light.

I'm thinking quite a large tile - 8x12 inch in a matt light beige. Like this.

But wondering if I should go for something a bit more statement-y!

I also liked the slightly copper-y look of the tiles they use in the brochure on the gloss slab look here.

So, what do you think?!

I'd really like turquoise sparkly but DH would divorce me have a fit not approve.

Right. I don't imagine anyone is going to come and talk tiles with me at the time of night so I'll come back in the morning and hope for some inspiration!

I prefer the copper ones to the big beige ones. There are some lovely copper ones in Fired Earth. I have a white kitchen with oak work tops and have a french green/grey called lichen from FE laid in a brick pattern and tehy look great.

Beige with cream could be a little bit meh and not mad on the bronze/copper ones either - I was going to suggest a brick style tile for a small kitchen in chalky/grey colours but noddy got there first Hmm.

I like the copper too - not mosaic but I've seen some bigger tiles with just a shimmer of bronze. But I'm worried it'll be too dark. The walnut is VERY dark brown!

Ooh thanks lala and noddy. I'll have a look!

love these

Do you have to have tiles?.Can you not manage with an walnut upstand?.I'm just putting tiles where i need it.Above the range i'm going to have antique tiles diagonally set with small cream hand-made ones and above the sink i'm not sure [waiting for inspiration to strike Blush].The rest of the area i'm having Iroko upstands and slate in the cooking area. But i don't know whether i will regret this as 4 dc's are capable of wrecking everything!.

noddyholder · 12/05/2011 10:45

That sounds lovely teta. Tiles are hugely back in vogue in interiors and glass back splashes becoming less popular. A friend has jut ripped hers out to re tile it! I am tempted to save it but have nowhere to put it! She is going for plain cream fired earth square rustic tiles and her kitchen sounds a bit like yours.

comeflywithme · 12/05/2011 12:45

Wow! I love those Noddy - only about £430 per sq m more expensive than the cream B&Q ones!! Grin

Oh god teta. Now I'm wondering if I do need them!!! Don't put an alternative in my head! I'll never get it done! I think DH would prefer tiles for the clinical clean-ness.

Right. I think I'm going to go for the boring, won't date, light coloured tiles and then when it's all in I can think about a bit of colour on the walls.

Thank you all for your input!

(my ideal would be those full wall glass splashbacks that you have to have handmade to cut out your sockets and everything this www.glasslogic.co.uk/splashbacks.html but they'd probably be a horror to keep shiny!)

We are having a glass splashback fitted on monday that has been cut to fit the wall and sockets etc. I think you should go for whatever you feel will fit your kitchen rather than what trends are in and out. If that was the case then we would all be changing our decor every year!

Good luck ( and I quite like the beige ones - means you can introduce colour into your kitchen through other means)

Hi, I am in America, so this is my evening!
I agree that the beige and the cream gloss together is not a good look, and prefer the metallic, maybe cut the B&Q metallic into strips and use it as a border strip....depends a bit on the configuration of the cabinets as to whether this would work. What is on the floor? take that into consideration, perhaps. darker tone on floor, then maybe carefully match the cabinets with a neutral tile and use the metallic as features, horizontally or in vertical blocks?

I overheard a John Lewis kitchen salesman this week saying, "No-one puts tiles in kitchens any more. We don't stock them now" Not sure JL ever did stock tiles but, there you go. The JL view on tiles.
