Removal costs

I am feeling a bit shell-shocked and just wanted some opinions - it is quite possible I am being delusional and will just have to cough up! I've had two removers out to quote to move us 4 doors up the road. (Two more coming tonight.) Each has come back with about £2000, which is significantly higher than I expected! There is no way we paid anything like that when we moved here, which was only 5 years ago. Cost includes packing (as it did last time). Does this sound right to you - do they quote on a fixed per-volume rate or (cynical) do they bump it up because we probably appear reasonably affluent, having a couple of expensive bits of furniture (and a lot of cheap ones!)
It's a 3-bed-1-box, so not huge.
Just interested I suppose to know what other people have paid recently.

We have been quoted £1200 (after a bit of haggling) to move from a 4-bed semi to another one in south-east London/Kent. That includes them packing for us. We don't have any expensive bits of furniture really, but do have a hell of a lot to pack.

Thanks. That sounds more reasonable! I think I was expecting about 1000.

Bl**dy hell. I am planning to move farms from Bucks to Devon. Doesn't bear thinking about. I may seriously end up hiring my own lorry :-0

I paid just under 1k to move from London to 70-odd miles away! I did most of my packing (they provided a lot of the boxes) but they also had to go and collect everything that was in storage a mile up the road. Plus I have 4 sofas (don't ask), 2 double beds and two singles plus A LOT of garden stuff so we're not on the minimal side Blush

Ask them for a breakdown of the costs - some of that could well be insurance which has ballooned over the past few years. See if your contents insurer will cover it and then you can knock a big chunk off?

Moved last week. Three beds, I living, 1 kitchen diner plus garage (lots of stuff). They packed day before, moved out of townhouse so lots of furniture to be dismantled. Total cost approx £900. Due to complete arse of a vendor (another story) didn't finish til 9pm so that included £100 tip to men who were lovely. Used 'simply removals' and am based northwest.

I'm in the northwest too so thank you very much! I will give them a call
