1930s Detached House - what to do with kitchen???

Have bought a 1930s detached house recently. It has a kitchen which is 7 by 13ft, the reception room next to it is 12 by 14ft. Kitchen was last done back in the 70s by the look of it. It is really narrow with units each side and oven is rammed in the corner. Were thinking of extending to the back but it is too expensive. Therefore, we are now thinking of doing a kitchen diner and knocking through to the reception next to it.

Has anyone done similar, any ideas on layout or other tips? We are thinking of putting a breakfast bar in between to separate the 2 areas and obviously would need a RSJ.

Thanks for your help.

Knock sideways for time being and then, when you have money build out as well across whole width of house (or even L-shaped wrap around back and side). It works really well in 1930s houses because, unlike Victorian and Edwardian houses, the back room is usually on the same level as the rest of the rooms, there is no awkward drop down at the back.
