Painting eggshell over gloss

We've inherited a house with gloss woodwork which was (many moons ago) white and is now yucky cream/yellow. I want to paint this white eggshell. What prep do i need to do before painting, if any?

TIA

Hiya, im currently doing the same on my old house at the moment, The upstairs in a couple of the bedrooms ive just started with rough sandpaper working my way down through medium to fine, then at least 2 coats of undercoat and then the gloss. It looks ok but not the finish id wanted to be honest.

The downstairs including the staircase i actually got hold of a heat gun (think thats what there called) and ive sent the past 2 days scraping off the old paint of up to 7 layers (so far and counting), i know itsa bit more work but the finish will be a lot better and will be the 1st thing people see when they come in. the guns are reasonable anyway but if you look i car boots etc you can get one evan cheaper, mine was £1 from a car boot, and im obsessed with it now, my boyfriend had to hide it cos im constantly searching for more paint to strip!!!!

Thanks Vix, I can imagine a heat gun getting totally addictive! Can't beleive you got such a bargain. Will have a look on ebay. I know what you mean i was concerned that sanding wont give the new, smooth effect I want.

Hiya, It definatly didnt do it for me anyway but does depend on the state of the paint on there as it is, its not such a bargain when you consider how much i spent on paint stripper, that hardly did anything at all! even now i have to go back over the paint stripped bits with the heat gun - any excuse ha ha!!

Can I ask a question.... would a wallpaper stripper do the same job as a heat gun?

Vix1980 · 06/05/2011 07:54

Hi, no, well actually maybe be but it does take a lot longer, i did a staircase in a day (not inc spindles) but did try with the stripper before hand and it didnt really do anything apart from a) set of the smoke alarms, and b) make everywere soaking wet!

I sanded ours with a black & decker mouse and they've come up really well.
