I'm having cream gloss units, stainless steel appliances/hob/sink, wood affect laminate, tiles that have cream and shades of beige etc in them - not chosen yet.

My plan is to pain the newly plastered walls and then put up clear or frosted class splashbacks.

what colour would you paint the walls????

it depends really on how big your kitchen is & how much light it gets, but personally I would go with something along the lines of a pale mint/jade green, if your room is larger & brighter & can carry a stronger colour, maybe something like a bold lime green instead

We had cream gloss cabinets in our old house, then cream rectangular tiles as a splashback around the work top and painted the walls dusly pink. It looked really nice and a bit different.

I'd really like those skinny mini splash backs things that you get with granite work tops but no can do!

ABsolutely detest tiles Confused

Any other ideas?

Your kitchen sounds similar to ours (start date in May) except for the worktop.

We're painting the walls a pale olive green then having a glass splashback and glass behind the sink.

I've just discovered they do upstand in 2 different wood block laminates so guess I will go for one of those!

We've got a small open plan 60's house - very light. Am tempted to do the kitchen in magnolia diamond like the rest of the house - not very adventurous am I!!!

Have you thought of having stainless steel splash backs too??, or maybe carry the cupboards colour & gloss onto the glass splashback I've seen companies offer a colour match, so you could get the exact same

that might make decorating simpler??, you could even go with chalk white on the walls, & accessorise with any strong colour or print you like to lift the look & give any feel you like - retro print (or whatever your taste) wall paper on one wall or recess & pick up a colour from that for accessories

CarGirl · 23/04/2011 20:48

stainless steel splashback has been considered but from what I've read a pain to clean!

Hmm there is no suitable wall or recess for wallpapering - think box.

I will see if I can link to the CAD thingy - although it's not actually how it will be.

Here is a link to the CAD thingy looking into the kitchen from the dining area.

Only there will be no wall cupboards either side of the hob
Hob will be gas
Wood laminate worktops with upstand
Possibly no handles at all on the units - as I hate handles!

If it were me, I'd put wallpaper on the hob wall, if you are going without handles then possibly something quite funky, as opposed to retro - zebra print would look great with chalk white on the rest of the walls & bright accessories, such as red, shocking pink etc - but then thats my personal taste, so won't be offended if you hate that idea & prefer something safer - you can use cloth backed vinyl table cover fabric as wallpaper sticks up with PVA & its brilliant to wipe clean - I've done this on my own kitchen wall - with a monochrome 50s pin up type print

I have 2 stainless steel sinks in mine, 1 shallow cleaning sink (forget the name) & find they come up lovely with lemon & vinegar, so never found them a pain to clean, but obviously not splash backs, but I think it would work just as well, it does with my SS kitchen accessories

What is your worktops?? - seeing the plan, your kitchen is similar to mine, but mine is high gloss white, with white/grey granite tops & I've continued the granite as splash backs on the hob & sink, - it gives a lovely clean line, so if possible continuing your work tops as splash backs might be a better idea, it leaves it open for changing the decor easily when you get tired of it

CarGirl · 23/04/2011 21:34

worktop is laminate and I can get upstands in the wood effect so will do that.

Am intreged about the pvc cloth thing.........with certainly consider it.

I think the issue is with stainless steel is getting the fat/oil splatters off without scratching etc

Thats probably the best idea, as I say it makes decorating & changing it again later much easier

you might also consider just painting it all white to start off with with, & then decide what you actually want to do decor/colour wise - I did that with mine as i thought the room too dark/small to take print or colour, (it had been a very odd crowded layout with dark wood & nasty small brown & coffee tiles everywhereConfused)

but once everything was in place I realised it wasn't as small & dark as I thought & I could be a bit more adventurous with it & now have it a retro 50s green with the mono print, with accessories in retro 50s pink & stainless steel & it still looks loads bigger & brighter than I ever thought it could :)

The Vinyl on the walls came about because I couldn't find a wallpaper I liked, & spotted it in a shop & loved it, so glad I did as its much easier to clean than wall paper - I PVA'd the walls first - section at a time so not to dry out & used a stanley knife to cut it in, much easier to put up than wall paper too :)

You can get a huge range of coloured glass splashbacks, I love these. If you don't want to choose one, they will still give you inspiration about what colour to pick.
