HELP me decide COLOUR of KITCHEN Units!

Hi
Just finalised an order for a shaker kitchen from Harvey Jones and we can have it any dulux colour we want - if we wanted a farrow and ball shade, they can match it as well. We would love some ideas please! The room will be painted in a neutral colour with stone flooring (the room is still being built), with a roof lantern and lots of floor to ceiling height windows on one side (so lots of light coming in). all the worktops are granite, with a black aga. Now if you are able to imagine that, we are thinking of maybe a greenish (not bright green, more like dark green shade) like French Gray or Stone White colour from F&B.
Help! www.farrow-ball.com/colours/paint/fcp-category/list?resetFilters=true

thanks

I am having a solid wood kitchen painted in F&B skimming stone and island will be blue/green , utility -Teresas green and doors out to patio Dix Blue.Walls are going to be strong white as this looked fresh in our new dining extension [with rooflight].The kitchen sadly is still dark [old edwardian room] so has to be painted fairly light colours plus the floor is light coloured travertine throughout. As you can tell i have put some thought into this [and spent a fortune on F&B tester pots in the process].

Can I ask where you got the travertine and who is fitting it? I had one quote for 10k for apply and fit for the whole area , which is about 54 sqm and nearly fainted. Would have to sell one of the kids. Haha

I got mine at Wickes just before christmas as i got 50% off.I paid just over 1000 pounds for 50 metres worth[i think though i will have to go and check my accounts].I also had to order another 500 pounds worth a couple of months ago as there was 30 % off.The tiler [who my builder uses] is charging 28 pounds per square metre .This includes all grouting and adhesive. He has said they seem to be remarkably good quality for the price. The most important job to do is to seal them before grouting and after .I have bought Lithofin which is expensive but worth it.I think the total bill will come to 3500-4000 pounds for 60 plus metres worth.I live in the countryside in the midlands and the price is probably a lot more reasonable than the south of the country tbw.Sorry for the rather disjointed post [ 4 dc's on easter holiday plus a headache!].

thanks so much for that

Page, are you describing our kitchen?! We have roof lantern, lots of windows, limestone flooring (ok, not travertine but very similar) and neutral walls, plus granite tops (grey) and a black range.

We have light blue units. They're called cornflower but definately don't look like what you imagine cornflower is. They weren't handpainted so I don't know the exact colour or paint manufacturer.
Probably somewhere between cabbage white and borrowed light.

Almost everyone who's seen the kitchen comments on the lovely colour of the units

but you will need to make sure it doesn't look too cold. We also have an oak top for our island which warms it up, and I'm currently struggling to find the right fabric for the curtains/blinds, but that's a whole another thread.

On fitting the floors, make sure you get a proper tiler rather than a builder who is good at tiling. We really regret that.

We have just had our kitchen cupboards painted in a similar shade to Stone White (slightly more green), using Dulux Celtic Forest 2 (started off with a tester of the lighter shade of Celtic Forest, but it was too pale for us). It is a lovely creamy/grey/green which changes a lot depending on the time of day - quite creamy green early on, pea green ish at midday, more grey in artificial light. Do get tester pots and paint on a large area and look at under all lighting conditions.

We have a mix of oak and granite worktops, cream walls, travertine look alike tiles, in a very light room (windows & french doors on 3 sides) and some units are also painted in a grey colour (Dulux Quartz Flint 1) with stainless steel range and appliances. Am very pleased with how it looks, just waiting now for the electrician to finish off and steel splashback to be fitted.

dumb question alert - can you only paint solid wood doors with normal paint? What could I do with crappy old melamine ones as a stop gap before new kitchen later on?

Mandy21 · 20/04/2011 10:37

We have done a makeover of our inherited kitchen by painting the oak cabinets in F&B French Gray. We have black (sadly not granite!) worktops / range and a stone floor. Walls are Wimborne White (I think - tried so many shades!) and everyone thinks it looks lovely (including me!). Have a friend who has the Wickes kitchen which come ready-painted in exactly the same colour (F&B French Gray) and I think she has solid wooden worktops (and slightly more "period" touches like a butler sink etc) and it looks beautiful.

Page 62 your kitchen sounds heavenly. I do love frecnh grey but have only used it ouside on our front door and gate where it loked a little insipid and i changed it for lichen the same but darker.... I think indoors FG may have the same hue as lichen outdoors IYSWIM which sounds lovely.

I ADORE borrowed light but it may be a little nippy for a big kitchen

I spent MONTHS choosing the colour for mine and when it was fitted it was just primed in white and I almost threw the towel in and did it that!!! Confused however I stuck to the paint I had chosen and two years on would do it again...shaded white.

I ike blackened as well actually ...hmmmm not sure how helpful i am being!

NotaMopsa · 20/04/2011 20:51

my aga is pewter which is almost black but not quite - although black might have more contrast....

Page62 · 24/04/2011 10:01

Thanks for all the ideas!! So scared it won't look right!
