Can old slate worktops be repolished?

Am thinking of reusing very old scratched worktops from my demolished pantry in my new kitchen [skinflint emoticon].Can they be repolished ?.Is it worthwhile just trying to polish with slate cleaner and wire wool or will they have to be completely redone at a stonemasons?.I am trying to avoid a massive granite bill by using the slate and Ikea oak worktop if at all possible.

Can be repolished but I'd use a professional.

Are you sure they are slate rather than sandstone or granite?

Are definitely slate - probably original to the house [built in 1904] pantry was separate to the back entrance along with meat hooks and large cooling vents.Area has now become our new cloakroom cum bootroom and has been knocked through.Do i accept existing wear and tear, or revamp?

We just redid our knackered slate floor with Wickes' own label slate tile sealant. It looks amazing. Cost about £10!

But slate is relatively soft, and so not really suitable for polishing. Due to cleavage it is good for tiles, pantry shelves, meat slab and the like, but I wouldn't have thought you would get a good polished finish to it.

DP has pointed out that hard welsh slate is used in kitchen worktops. Appologies for wrong information.
