toy storage for the living room?

We don't have a playroom, and are now fed-up with the living room over-flowing with plastic tat, and piled up so that DD (3) can't really get at it properly. Does anyone have any recommendations for good storage which is nice enough to go in a living room rather than a playroom?

{Watches with interest from behind boxes of primary coloured plastic}

We have been through many over the last 8 years, best ones are from Store 21, formerly Quality Seconds, they are brown reed/wickery stuff, with fake leather tops, that you can sit on.

Had them a couple of years, they still look new, and much much more kiving room like than all the other crap storage we have bought over the years

Great Little Trading company have nice stackable wooden open boxes - but they have the toys on display, not shut away. Very expensive (unless you buy it when they have offers on) but might be worth it if you want something sturdy and (relatively) nice-looking?

we have that to put the TV on, and the toys are hidden in something similar to that on the lower level. Easy to pull and completely "adult' when tidy.

Thanks for those links; have found www.toytidy.com/shop/31012/cubby-play-store-x-16-with-trays/details this on Toy Tidy, and am now seeing if I can find a discount code.

I have a laundry basket (taller) that looks just like that adair

ha, me too.

We have a few books in the sideboard in the living room (freecycle, is meant to be given a makeover at some point). the toys are in another room- in whatever storage we have (mostly a huge chest of drawers. Hemnes. Ikea).

I've been wondering about getting an old G Plan style sideboard to keep all the crap stuff in. At the moment we have assorted boxes on the shelf.

We got an antique dresser (a bit like this but plainer and without the drawers) when we were stuck for storage after Christmas. We keep vases/nice china (it's in the dining room) in the top and DD has her more 'stackable' toys in the cupboard underneath. Smaller plasticky toys get chucked in one of these.

WreckoftheHesperus · 13/04/2011 15:33

these are all good; problem is, looking at the massive pile of toys, lots of them seem to be large ride-on type things which are never going to fit anywhere...

I have a basket from ikea, sort of wicker but better. No lid though so does overflow.
