Can I ask you to give me an idea of how big your living room is?

Only reply if it is not massive please or I will be Envy Have a really crappy rented flat but a fairly big living room. It's just me and DD in the house and am hoping to buy a place soon but the ones I can afford seem to have pretty small living rooms compared to this. Difficult to visualise how they would look with different layout etc but one I saw is 15' x 12' Can I ask if you have a handy measuring device and the inclination to use it, tell me if yours is similar and how many folk can comfortably lounge about in it?

21 ft by 12 ft

we have a 6 seater corner sofa and a two seater sofa. Two adults, two toddlers and two very large dogs can comfortably lounge in there!

MirandaGoshawk · 12/04/2011 21:45

That sounds like a fairly standard sized room. Much bigger & you'd need a mahoosive telly Grin

Paschaelina · 12/04/2011 21:48

I think ours is about 12'x12', with a large woodburning stove in the fireplace poang chair one side, tv etc other side next to door. 3-seater sofa opposite, 2 windows.

Its comfortable for 3 or 4 but a squash after that. We do have use of another room though if more people are here.

Its square, more or less. If it was longer but narrower don't know if I would like that.

ChoccoVersial · 12/04/2011 21:49

Ours is mahoosive (about 26' by 20') but there are five of us!! If it was just me and one other I would be fine in a much smaller room.

Thanks for replies. I would need to fit a little dining table in a corner as kitchen all fitted units and no space for eating but I guess a little fold down one could be the way - so long as I always fold it down and not let a pile of paperwork and other "stuff" take root on it as I have at the moment Blush

I think ours is 12' x 17' but about 2' of the length includes the alcoves.
We have a 3 seater settee and 2 chairs.
When we were looking round houses a lot of lounges looked tiny because people had HUGE tellies and really big deep squishy sofas. We have a wonderfully comfy (falling apart) traditional chesterfield settee. A great size for lounging on but compact so we've still got loads of floor space.

We're only 2 adults and 1 child and DH is usually in his little room upstairs in the evening but we can comfortably get 4-6 adults in here, mainly because we're happy to sit on the floor too and have lots of comfy cushions and blankets.

It is a front room in a 1960's council flat built to Parker Morris standards.

pooka · 12/04/2011 22:19

About 15 by 15 (into bay window).

We have three seater sofa. An armchair. A huge window seat that can seat 4 or 5, but prob 2 in more comfort. A padded footstool that the kids sometimes lie on.

2 adults and 3 kids can be pretty comfortable.

GrendelsMum · 13/04/2011 07:57

I think that smaller can be better for smaller numbers of people. I once house-sat in a big 1930s house with a big sitting room, and you never felt that the room was well laid out for conversation unless you had about 8 people there. If there were two or three people, you either all squashed up on the sofa, or you were miles away from each other on arm charis.

EsmeWeatherwax · 13/04/2011 08:27

Mine is 12ft by 19ft, but that includes dining bit that is 2 ft narrower. We have two two heaters and an armchair, works really well for two adults and two kids. It's our only real living space tho, rest of house is teeny!

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 13/04/2011 08:32

Ours is on the small side, about 14 by 12ft I think. We have a bay aswell which is wasted space although the readiator is below the window in the bay.

We have 2 sofa's, they are 2 seaters but fut 3 IYSWIM, a coffeee table and tv gubbins.

It feels a bit cosy when we are all in there but we are lucky to have a big open plan kitchen/dining room with a sofa in aswell at the back of the house so we all spend most of the day in there!

Psalmead · 13/04/2011 09:51

Ours is about 22 x 16 but also includes a dining area. DH, DD and me are comfortable lounging around in there!

MrsVidic · 13/04/2011 09:58

23 x 13 fits niceley

notquitenormal · 13/04/2011 10:26

Ours is 19 x 11 and we're quite sparse with a 3 seater and an armchair. Next door though is exactly the same and has a big corner sofa, two arm chairs and a desk quite comfortably.

I tihnk 15x12 could be doable depending on the shape and where the doors are.

Ours is 15'5 by 12'5 living room/dining room and I think it's quite big! We have:

large 3-seater sofa
2 large armchairs
rocking chair
stand for TV and stereo
dining table plus four chairs
2 bookcases
cd storage
4 side tables
And a fairly big tree at Christmas!

It sounds crowded written down like that but there is loads of room. We are two adults and two small children but can easily accommodate 3 more adults before it starts to feel cramped. The table opens out to seat eight if necessary and we do this on a regular basis. We have to move it into the middle of the room and back again when we've finished eating but it's pretty easy. HTH.

culturemulcher · 14/04/2011 14:33

Roughly 20' x 14'

It's lovely - feels like a generous, comfrotable space with lots of room for two full sized sofas, bookshelves, lamps, etc without feeling too big or that you have to divide the room into two uses.

It was one of the reasons we fell for the house.

Not very big.

12' x 10' we have two (small) sofas, a coffee table, book shelf and a tv unit in it though and its not too crowded.

Our house is a small Victorian terrace.

RoyalBlingThing · 14/04/2011 15:18

My first house was similar to coralpinks but irrc was 11 by 10 which included the bay window.

It had the original fireplace with two alcoves (one of which we put the tv into) the other had a three seater sofa wedged into it, and an armchair on the other side it was a bit cozy at Christmas with the mahoosive tree dh used to buy.

We used to keep bean bags and floor cushions in the cupboard under the stairs for when we had people over.

RoyalBlingThing · 14/04/2011 15:20

Re reading OP we managed 8 people sitting down plus two cats at a pinch

TabithaTwitchet · 14/04/2011 15:48

Ours is about 12 and a half by 15 and a half feet, so v. similar to what you are looking at. We have only just moved in, and so it is a little bit lacking in furniture at present; we have a 2 seater sofa and 2 armchairs along one long wall, planning to put a nice new 3 seater sofa round the corner from the 2 seater once we have saved up enough to buy it! We also have a couple of medium sized bookcases and a desk in there, (plus loads of toys that have already migrated in, ) and there is still loads of room.

Room feels nice and spacious to me, possibly because it has large windows and is very light. I'm sure we will easily fit 7 or 8 people in sitting comfortably, haven't actually had large numbers of visitors yet, as I say, only just moved in.
