DD's playroom is full of crap much loved toys but she starts secondary school in September. I'm wanting to change the room into a reading/study/ sitting room which still stores all her toys but is a more grown up space for both of us. I have a 4.7 metre wall which I want to fill with bookcases/ storage cupboards. Room is in an 1840's cottage so don't want to go too contemporary. If wall could also house TV, that would be good. Any ideas?

Ikea is your friend. :)
It is all a bit modern but you could make it work.

Thanks Moomoomie...am toying with LIATORP but have had to reject as there's a door at one end of my wall, which reduces available depth for units. Sadly Ikea too deep. Will have to get built in, I think but am looking for inspiration to show joiner.

I'd second Ikea - get the wardrobes with sliding doors, the shallow ones (less than 400mm deep) should be fine if you don't want clothes in there. You can paint the doors a heritage colour to make them seem less modern. I'd be tempted to put them along the entire wall with a TV on a pull-out stand in one of them but you could always have one area of open shelves with the TV and a few books/photos etc on it. But then, I would also be telling your daughter it is time to get rid of her toys Wink.

Haha Longlegs...believe me, I have tried! Am hoping a clear out will be necessitated by wall of storage not quite taking everything but cunningly leaving to DD to decide what stays and what goes. Will be (pretending to) involve DD in the makeover process so she's on side!

We have a wall of Billy bookcases. When the toys get smaller and don't stick out over the edge we will get doors for them.

I've used Ikea's Ivar shelving which is really flexible. It comes in a variety of heights and depths and although it doesn't normally have doors I have fitted some using piano hinges, or you can buy a cabinet that sits on the shelves.

Agree Billy bookcases are a godsend, but no good for stupidly large toys. Perhaps I could have Billy at either end of wall (dodging depth problem) and something else in the middle. Think will have another look at Ikea as agree it seems designed for folk with too much crap hoarding problem.

Can the massive toys go in her room?

morfamawddach · 06/04/2011 11:05

Right, nocake, am thumbing through Ikea catalogue looking for IVAR...intriguing idea making own doors. Like the sound of that...could invent something in keeping with cottagey room then.

Hi Paperview...Dd's bedroom basically a box room, so very tiny...just room for a bed and chest of drawers...hence downstairs room totally taken over by all her gubbins. Sensible thing would be to chuck out toys but don't want to hasten the end of her childhood...plus she does still play with them...especially playmobil.

If you'd like something bespoke but without bespoke prices, you could try Jali. You can design online and they will deliver it ready to assemble and paint. I'm considering this for my DS's room as there is a large alcove to fill.

Here, Jali

Ikea Besta?

morfamawddach · 06/04/2011 14:19

Deux! Thanks for the tip. Jali new to me but looks just what I'm looking for. Will investigate further. Seems to combine Ikea practicality with option to customise. Also quite neutral go anywhere designs. Would be handy not to go bespoke as could then take with us if we move. As well as saving me a packet I do not have. Wink

Porkchopster...Ikea besta for my fantasy glass box house! Fear would look too modern in my cottage. Playroom has large Victorian fireplace with old tiles around so can't imagine anything very sleek with it. I could lack interior design vision, though!

Oooh, Jali could be the answer to my (assorted) prayers! Thank you , Deux!
