How do you find a good structural engineer?

We want to plan a knockthrough and extension. Been advised by our builder not to appoint an architect as it is costly and they dont like working with them (he is a great builder).
He advises finding a structural engineer to do the calculations and drawings.
Can anyone advise how I find a good one?
thanks

I would seriously consider using an architect if you're building an extension (unless it is an extremely simple one). The reason being that a structural engineer will be able to do the calculations - but he won't advise on design. And you need that combo of well designed extension as well as a sound structural plan. Plus, the architect will know what can fly past planning permission and help with the whole planning process. The structural engineer will usually only have experience with building control and what methods of construction/materials/etc will be needed.

I agree with Dahokolomoki (but then I would wouldn't I). :)

If it's a relatively small job then a structural engineer should be OK but then so would an Architectural Technician or a Chartered Building Surveyor, both of whom would probably be less expensive.

If however the work is fairly extensive, your house is of architectural interest or is a listed building then I would strongly recommend you appoint an Architect. Go to www.architecture.com to find local Architects.

(Assuming of course you don't live in west Cornwall - if you do PM me for a fee estimate)!
