Anyone have a combination washer/dryer you would mend?

And if so, where did you buy it?

And conversely, any brands to definitely steer clear of?

Thank you.

Argh - headline supposed to read 'you would recommend'.

Don't get a hotpoint, had one delivered last week and was faulty so is being returned. AEG/Zannussi are not great but they do repair them quite quickly. Miele is supposed to be the only dencent washer/drier but ££££.

amummyinwaiting · 04/04/2011 11:04

Ours is Candy and crap!Dryer would dry clothes into tiny tiny balls of creased nastiness, and then it broke after eighteen months (just the dryer bit) but it is now about 8 years old and I am waiting hoping it will break soon!

EldonAve · 04/04/2011 12:12

don't buy smeg

carocaro · 04/04/2011 20:22

Miele had it ten years, never a peep of problem, expensive but worth it with all the washing with two boys I do!

crazycarol · 05/04/2011 22:36

Had a Bosch which I loved for 13 years and replaced it before it broke down (long story!). Have an AEG now and love it because it has a huge drum size, it is supposed to be one of the quietest machines on the market & it is a Which best buy. Have had it for 18 months nearly and my only complaint is that it doesn't iron the clothes too and put them away. We got it from John Lewis because they had a special offer of free 5 year warranty with it (worth about £200). Someone told me recently that John Lewis own brand is made by AEG

MollieO · 05/04/2011 22:42

I have a new a Bosch that replaced my 11 yr old Bosch. Very simple to use and uses no water on the drying programmes. My mum got an AEG the month before and now wishes she'd got a Bosch. Programming is a bit more complicated with the AEG apparently (my mum is an expert in a wide variety of washing programmes Grin).

RubberDuck · 05/04/2011 22:49

We have an LG and I really like it having had very mediocre washer dryers before (had a terrible AEG - apparently they're basically rebadged Zanussis now :()

I did have a problem with it but the engineer was bloody awesome (within warranty), came out quickly (a couple of days before Christmas!) and extracted a lot of fluff and a small plastic toy Blush.

Oh and it's direct drive so less likely to go wrong apparently and it sings to me when it's done Grin

Honneybunny · 05/04/2011 22:55

would second going: don't buy a hotpoint. we did in november 2008. it stopped working within weeks, and has been repaired now so many times, that i have lost count. i know all their engineers by name now.
also, once your machine is past a certain age, or possibly past a certain number of repairs, they do not send someone out to fix as quickly anymore. the last two repair visits we have had to survive for a week without a working washing machine, which is pretty much impossible with 2 ds-s.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Have been doing a bit of research online via the John Lewis website, and am amazed at the variation in prices - the range is huge, from £400 - £1800.

i know it may be a case of 'you get what you pay for', (and I am not looking for the cheapest machine I can find - Hotpoint, Indesit), but also don't subscribe to the 'most expensive = best' school of thought either.

The only Miele offered is priced at £1800, which makes it £700 dearer than the Bosch and Siemens models. Shock

Here is the link to the John Lewis webpage

www.johnlewis.com/Electricals/Integrated+Appliances/Integrated+Appliances/Integrated+Washer+Dryers/10655/ProductCategory.aspx

I'm having a hard time grasping what makes a Miele so much better.....can anyone shed any light?

I have a Miele - we had an Indesit one and it's so much better than that one in every way. As a stand-along washer it's fantastic (gentle on clothes, fast, great spin) but as a dryer it's not bad either. Won't do a full load, but none of them do, but actually dries stuff rather than leaving it damply steaming like our old one. Towels come out fluffy and it's 'intelligent' which means it runs for as long as the clothes need, so saves energy.

RubberDuck · 06/04/2011 08:12

That's why I like the LG - it may not do a full load to dry (9kg wash/6kg dry) but it's heaps better than my old AEG (6kg wash/3kg dry!) - most of my full loads ARE only 6kg anyway, so I can leave them in, dry it and not worry about it.

Earlybird · 06/04/2011 11:17

LG does not appear on the John Lewis website, so presumably they don't sell that brand.

I'm learning more about machines than I ever knew before, that is for certain!

RubberDuck · 06/04/2011 11:31

John Lewis stock it

Earlybird · 06/04/2011 18:10

Rubberduck - thank you for the link. I am after an integrated machine, so the one you show won't work.

Hmm

RubberDuck · 06/04/2011 18:48

Arse, that's a pain.

Heh, yeah, although my non-integrated kitchen is now a right mismatch because all our appliances are different ages and have somehow ended up different colours! (we went through a silver appliance phase and are now drifting back to white - at least the washing machine has white AND silver so it looks half deliberate!!)

Earlybird · 08/04/2011 19:18

Still researching, and still open for suggestions.

It seems that most of the 'review' sites such as Which? and Good Housekeeping don't offer much for integrated units. Still, I suppose it is a reasonable way to research brands in general, even if reviews for specific models I need are not featured..

Don't buy Indeshit. In fact, if you can avoid buying a combined washer/dryer, do so. There is more to go wrong (and our Indeshit one broke every six months or so) and the drier is never as good as a stand-alone drier. They just make the wet clothes hot.

Sorry I can't be more positive.

Celibin · 09/04/2011 07:54

Dear Earlybird Website called Washerhelp recommends MIele (appears to have a 10 yr guarantee on some models) Our washing repairman advised not to buy w/dryer as more likely to go wrong. Also if you have to do one load after the other (which is common in a family) you have to wait for the first lot to dry before you can wash the second : my friend ends up drying first load in conservatory while 2 nd load is washing

Celibin · 09/04/2011 08:03

Hotpoint: may be cheaper etc but they do offer 5 year parts only guarantee free of charge: great if there is a big fault.

Earlybird · 09/04/2011 13:55

Thanks for additional tips ladies.

I've been mainly looking at the more expensive units (Miele, Siemens, Bosch) in the hope that they will perform better/more reliably, and need fewer repairs and last longer.

Fwiw, there are only 2 of us in our family so our needs don't require daily washes, or several consecutive loads. Also, we are in a compact flat so no room for separate washer/dryer units.

My Miele washer dryer is fab. I have had mine five years and although it was mega expensive I would buy another one again. It's gone wrong once and was repaired under the 5 year guarantee.

I was told my current model would cost £1250 to replace so I reckon you can find one cheaper than thhe £1800 at John Lewis. Trying ringing Miele or looking at other websites. Seems v strange.

pippop1 · 10/04/2011 21:26

Ok I realise that's cos you are looking at integrated version not normal one. Mine is normal one (white) and is in a cupboard. Saves a lot of money!
