How do I find out where to turn the water off?

We're in a new house, I've never had to turn the water off in any house ever but I want to change the taps on the bath so we have a shower attachment. I've been told this is beyond me, so now I'm determined to do it.

There'll be a little tap uner the kitchen sink

Ummm, if you've no idea where the stopcock is it may well be beyond you Grin.

Try under the sink and, if that's no good, see if there is anywhere else obvious on the ground floor (loo next to front door, garage etc) where there might be one. Sometimes the upstairs rooms have their own stopcock in bathroom or airing cupboard. Otherwise you will need a special metal tool to open up the plate in the pavement in front of the house and turn it off there. Don't forget to turn off hot water tank too if you have one.

Good luck.

Ours is in the cupboard in the hall. Why, I don't know.

Maybe it is beyond me, but if you never try to do new things then everything is beyond you. I've had a look online and it seems the most difficult part (apart from finding the stopcock Wink) is access, so surely as a smallish woman this will be easier for me than a bigish man. I like to think I'm pretty intelligent and capable of following instructions and providing I'm able to turn the water off if I give it a go and can't do it then I just call someone and and they can do it.

DH is a plumber. He is catagorically telling you that changing a set of bath taps is the worst job going because its difficult to reach, limited space, you need a special tool called a shetak spanner as normal spanners cant fit in the gap. Its a bastard. Get someone in to do it properly, seriously.

He says if you want to prove yourself at plumbing, start with tap washers.

He says he doesn't mean that disrespectfully, he would say that to anyone.

Current house it is under the stairs, last house it was originally under the kitchen sink until a laid a new mains connection and put it in the cellar.

We haven't got one inside the house as it has been tiled in. I would have to lift the outside cover on the pavement outside the house to turn it off!!!
