REALLY need some advice on UPVC windows in loft conversion please!

So we're in the middle of a loft conversion and apparently I have to decide about windows today so they can be ordered tomorrow but I have next to no information!

We're having velux in the sloping roof and double glazed upvc in the back wall. I'm kind of thinking of paying more for white velux so they match white upvc windows. So far so good? And then what? I have no idea what to ask for aesthetically for the upvc window. I just want something that will look ok (in a victorian terrace) and will open properly. I'm starting to come to the conclusion that you can order any combination of window shapes and sizes that you want. Is that right? The brochure I've been given (duraflex) is crap, the builders are not enlightening me and I don't know what to do.

Help please?!

Velux will be the other side of the roof to your other windows so little point in making them match, imo. Velux windows are so discreet on the inside that there is little to be gained by specifying different coloured internal frames.

Yes, you can order pretty much any size you want window. Can't recommend a uPVC firm - if you want the windows to sit well in a Victorian house, then you should probably go for wooden sashes or something that apes them.

Not worth going for white velux as that will make them stand out more imo, much better to go for a wooden finish. Have a look at other loft extensions in the area to identify the look that you want, then take your builder to show them. Make sure the windows open properly, as ours only open half way and are a real pain. Our neighbours went for wooden sash and bitterly regret them as they have to be taken out every couple of years to be repainted.

Agree, have the velux as they come.

For the other window I thought I would go for wood every time but when it came to the crunch, went for UPVC sliding sash in my loft conversion and they are actually really nice. Work like normal sash but very good insulation heat/sound and both sections can be pulled in (at pull of a button) for cleaning. Look like sashes from outside with the little horn things either side of middle bar. More expensive but worth it.

Hmmm. Have already given the go ahead to order the white velux. Thought it would look less intrusive. What is wrong with the white ones?

Was thinking of going for UPVC sash but am worried about the cost....

Thanks for replies
