Looking for inspiration. Dh opposed to gravel - because it spreads out into the road. What looks best and is practical?

What's the verdict on the patterned concrete stuff?

We have bricks laid in a herringbone pattern. Looks very nice. Have been here eight years (it was here when we moved in) and have had no problems with it.

What about the weeds, is it a lot of work?

Just be aware that planning laws changed in October 2008, and planning permission is now required to lay traditional impermeable driveways that allow uncontrolled runoff of rainwater from the front gardens onto the road, because this can contribute to flooding and pollution of watercourses.

I think you can get permeable block paving, but you'd need to check.

No, weeds not a problem. Rake them out once a year from between cracks. That's it.

BikeRunSki · 30/03/2011 11:37

I was going to say, a Skoda Felicia, yes, very economical.

You will need to put down a permeable driveway. Two runs of slabs (for car wheels) and the rest grass is prefferred.

CaurnieBred · 30/03/2011 12:57

Emkana - our neighbours put down the patterned concrete and then they had a problem with the water mains and so part of it had to be dug up. They now have a patched driveway that looks awful so, unless this is really what you want, I would avoid.

I have those bricks with holes in the middle of them (squares) iyswim. They seem to be pretty good in terms of drainage. I do get the odd weed but they're easy enough to yank up

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 30/03/2011 13:01

I was going to say Ford Galaxy but I can see bikerunski beat me too itGrin

Under the car we have block paving. It does get weedy but dh goes at it with industrial strength weedkiller.

Looks lovely, we are very pleased with it. Before that we had gravel which was a nightmare, more on the path and road than on the driveway!

What is the difference between block paving and crazy paving?

OP posts:
BehindLockNumberNine · 30/03/2011 15:56

We are currently trying to decide what to do with our driveway so will mark my place if that is ok. We are on a slope, so gravel a no no. Looked at the patterned imprinted concrete but in two minds.
And worried about block paving slipping down the slope over time.

Does anyone have any great ideas??

We have block paving. \link{http://www.primrose-london.co.uk/eco-weeder-weed-wand-p-596.html?source=googlebase\This} is your friend as far as weeds are concerned. Done and dusted in minutes. Grin

GrendelsMum · 30/03/2011 19:41

We have mud. It has the advantage of being cheap Smile

thisisyesterday · 30/03/2011 19:45

we have this and it looks lovely (IMO!)

we don't get that many weeds tbh, but i actually don't kmind a bit of green here and there because we weren't going for a very modern, polished, flat kind of a look iyswim? it's supposed to look slightly old/rustic

thisisyesterday · 30/03/2011 19:45

block paving won't slip down a slope btw because all the edge blocks would be set in concrete so there would be nowhere for them to go

BellaBearisWideAwake · 30/03/2011 19:47

Gravel is evil. Bloody difficult for pushchairs, as much as anything.
