Restoring floorboards - can you recommend a good wax or varnish?

We have just stripped back to our original floorboards. We sanded them ourselves so it's not 100% perfect. Some dark patches remain. The gaps have been filled with slightly different coloured wood etc. Therefore I am wondering whether we should use a stain to try and hide our amateurish approach. Anyone have any thoughts on stains on old pine?

And what about a good hard wearing varnish or wax? We have young kids so it needs to be tough. I want a nice look too. Nothing too yellow or too gloss.

Osmo Polyx Oil, we used it very successfully on stripped boards. It is very hardwearing. It comes in tints but I've only used clear, it brings up the pine colour very nicely. Maybe use Wood Wax finish as a base coat to get the colour right?

There is also a range of woodstains called Hannant's which furniture makers use, which you could tint your wood with first to even out the colour. They are very natural colours not the orangy pine of Dulux varnish.

Can't remember what brand we used in the end, but having sanded back our floors (Victorian pine) not going too far as I didn't want to go too pale, we did a test on a plank of stains, varnishes, and waxes, and we settled on the wax. It took a bit of time to do as you have to rub each area slowly to build up the product, but it was great in the end, and 5 years later still looks great. We bought the wax from B&Q and. I think it was a "French oak" colour.....
