Knocking Through Kitchen

SaggyHairyArse · 27/03/2011 09:19

I have a galley kitchen that has seen better days and I want to knock it through into my main living area but a friend said what about he grease on your TV and the like which I hadn't thought about.

An extractor would sort that wouldn't it?

We have a kitchen through lounge through family room and I am not aware of grease even in the kitchen. We don't eat meat and don't fry in deep fat or anything though - I don't know if that makes a difference or not.

What on earth do you cook? We have a large live-in kitchen with a sitting area with a leather sofa and tv, other furniture etc. Never noticed it covered in grease. I do have a very good and large extractor fan which gets used if I'm cooking anything smelly.

I don't fry anything! Other than eggs on a weekend and onions when making casseroles and the like. Deffo no deep fat frying going on.

It was a friends comment that made me think about it Confused

a word of advice.....you get what you pay for with an extractor fan. we ran out of money after our extension and bought a powerful, but comparably cheap extractor. it works well but is SO bloody loud, i can't stand to use it because it gives me a headache!

Have you got a separate utility? We wondered about knocking through to kitchen but didn't want to have the sound of the washing machine drowning out whatever was going on in the family room.

I wonder about your friend's housekeeping! We have a separate utility and have the washing machine in there although it is pretty quiet. I dud ensure that I got the quietest dishwasher I could - Miele. The room including the kitchen part is 18' x 18'. I spend all my time in it as we have a floor to ceiling glass wall that overlooks the garden. I do have two other reception rooms to escape to. I think your room needs to be pretty big to have a kitchen combined living room if it will be your only reception room.

Ours isn't our only reception room but tbh we have only used the other once in a year so it might as well be. The dishwasher is in it and we do hear it when we watch tv but it is not that intrusive - it is a long room though. The other machines are in the utility room so that is not an issue.

I like that when friends are round for dinner we are all in the same room, even when I am cooking. I also like that I can potter in the kitchen while the dcs are playing in the same room.

The only draw back for us is that the room gets really messy on a daily basis.

We have an open plan house (very small 60's 3 bed) open plan kitchen/diner/lounge is very noisy. You can hear the kettle and washing machine over the TV!

Put it this way we can't wait to put internal doors in to seperate off the kitchen.

We have an open plan house at the moment- we may be having internal doors put in between the kitchen/diner and lounge at some stage but so far we love the open-planness of it- definitely no grease anywhere in the lounge!
